Police on the Isle of Wight are working to identify the owner of a large dog – described as an XL Bully or Staffy type – which attacked a man in Sandown yesterday morning (Friday).
The victim was out for a run along Culver Parade when the animal – which was not muzzled or on a lead – suddenly ran up from the beach and locked on to his arm.
Island Echo understands the man battled to get to loosen the dog’s grip, with the attacking animal’s owner then arriving to assist.
Thankfully, the victim was wearing a thick hoody so escaped injury – although he has been left shaken by the event.
The incident happened at around 06:55 opposite Sandham Gardens.
Those involved say that the dog appeared to be ‘XL Bully-type’, although Police say it has been reported to them that the animal was a large ‘Staffy-type’ dog.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has launched an investigation with enquiries ongoing to identify the dog and its owner.
This incident comes following a series of dog attacks in recent months. Back in February, a male was attacked in the Shide area of Newport. Then, towards the end of March, a woman was left with puncture wounds after being bitten by a dog in Oakfield, Ryde – with the animal later put to sleep.
Dog should of been on a bloody lead. Do we have a description of the owner, that might help.
Probably a tattoo’d freak. I am surprised the
uneducated Numpty’s don’t get the dogs tattoo’d.
Find the owner and bang him up, time to bring back
Dog licences.
Make dog licences expensive for larger dogs and
IW Council can employ Civil Enforcement Officers to
walk the streets and fine B’stards who should not be
allowed to own a dog and any IDIOT who does not have
their dog on a lead, take the dog away from them and
bang up the owner.
You only have to walk from Sandown to Shanklin and
the amount of Numpty’s with dogs off the lead is
alarming.
I don’t know what is worse UNEDUCATED speeding motorists
or
UNEDUCATED dog owners!
Unfortunately dogs should all be on leads in public places as they can be unpredictable and it’s better to be safe than a god forbid kid gets harmed! So many dogs not on leads with people walking around.
From what I have seen of many dog owners,
The owners themself should be kept on a
lead at all times.
A bit sweeping. Not all dogs or the owners have the tendency to be aggressive. I am surprised you didn’t blame it on a speeding car driver.
Very true, but there are many Numpty’s prowling the
streets with their dogs off their leads.
I have even see Numpty’s driving along island
roads with their pets sitting in open vehicles
it all happens on the island.
A description of the owner and the dog would have helped. Probably another thuggish little twerp who needs a tough looking dog to beef his pathetic self up.
You have summed up many of the dog owners,
full of Tatts, thankfully not the dog but the owners
Lol.
People should be vetted before being allowed to
own a dog.
Here come the usual sweeping comments, “all dogs are the same and therefore MUST be put on leads all the time”.
Please remember that MOST dogs are not aggressive and, in the right scenario, are perfectly fine to be off lead but still under control. Do not blame the majority for the minority of bad dog owners!
