Following an assault of a bus driver in Newport on Saturday (27th May), Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary have issued an appeal for help in identifying this man.
Police would like to speak with him after a bus driver was assaulted at Newport bus station shortly before 20:00 on Saturday (27th May). The bus he’d been driving had travelled from Ventnor.
The driver – who is in his 50s- was not seriously hurt.

So they have CCTV cameras throughout the bus and that’s the best picture they could get if I was a bus driver I would be refusing to work until the improve the CCTV for safety reasons
Not easy doing that when you are trying to earn a wage to survive. Perhaps the public should stick up for them. To be assaulted just doing your job, what on Earth is going on!! scumbags ought to be locked up!! But our prisons are full!! What’s going on in this country? Seems to be on a downward spiral!!
Everybody seems very quick to blame the passenger nevertheless I was on a bus not so long ago and heard a driver telling a passenger he would knock him the f**k out and from what I could hear it was over a wet ticket !! Now that doesn’t sit right either…Good and Bad in everybody I reckon, police, bus drivers and everybody else
Yes the cameras are not good but better cctv will not stop someone assaulting you. The world is not a nice place anymore.

Was the bus driver extremely rude? A lot of them are. Some are even aggressive. Perhaps this bloke got fed up being spoken to like dirt.
Not an excuse for violence. You sound like the old school bully that would lie that their said something horrible and get away with a violent assault. This kind of behaviour learned at schools because they don’t treat assaults for what they are and instead call them ‘bullying’ to play down and hide the crime.
It’s not the bus drivers fault. It will be the drunk that assaulted him for goodness sake!! Gosh, the driver is just trying to do his job!! There is no excuse for assaulting someone!!

You honestly have no idea how hard it is to be a driver. Rudeness is unacceptable but if you have to drive 4-5 hour stints at one time, stuck in traffic, rude and ignorant customers that don’t even acknowledge you as a person and have to deal with all the other road users at the same time and let’s be honest most of them should retake their test again. I think you wouldn’t have a beaming smile on your face and be welcoming.
I am sure the amount of crime in such a small rock. With drugs, violence and unsafe driving could possibly be the most dangerous and horribleous place in the South of England. And some say its a holiday place.

Bring back the old style bus conductors. Not to issue tickets but to back up the drivers during problems. They would also reassure passenger during their journey and probably increase bus usage. Nobody wants a nutter on their bus.

There are some awful scumbags about. I feel really sorry for the bus driver just doing his job. If they are rude sometimes it’s because of the rudeness they get doing the job like the scumbag that assaulted him!!
Some people just go looking for trouble. The driver is literally a sitting target for them to take out their frustration. Maybe S Vectis should bring back the safety screens that used to surround the driver when Covid was rife
