Notorious criminal Joseph Baker, wanted on a warrant for failing to appear at court last month, has finally been arrested by Police in Sandown this morning (Tuesday).
Officers descended on St John’s Road in the town earlier today after receiving a tip-off last Monday (26th September) that the wanted crim was living in a block of flats. It came just hours after Island Echo published a photo of the 28-year-old. However, it’s thought the warrant didn’t come through until yesterday.
It is understood that Baker – also known as Barrass – escaped out of a window when Police arrived shortly before 09:30 but he was soon apprehended in nearby Victoria Avenue. He has now been taken into custody at Newport Police Station and is expected to be put in front of the court later today.
As reported by Island Echo last week, Baker failed to appear at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday 23rd September having been charged with driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance. It is alleged that on 27th March this year Baker was caught driving a vehicle along the B3157 between Bridport and Weymouth.
The offences are said to have taken place just 6 months after Baker was handed a 2-year prison sentence for disqualified driving. Despite Police claiming back in October that this jail term would provide protection for the public, Baker was freed from prison to commit further offences.
It’s currently unclear why Baker was released from prison so early and why he was not recalled to prison in March, nor why he was given bail to appear at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court after appearing at Dorset Magistrates Court earlier in September.
Barrass has become notorious for leading Police on high-speed pursuits and defying the courts. Having been born without a lower left arm, Baker’s driving offences are said to have begun as a way of proving he can do what an able-bodied person can. The serial offender has racked up almost 50 offences since arriving on the Isle of Wight – the majority of which are motor related.
Some of Baker’s previous offences include driving for over 1 mile with a missing wheel before dumping a car in Ashey back in 2019. He has also served numerous driving bans and disqualifications following pursuits with Police.

They should chop off his remaining arm, I’d like to see the prat drive with two stumps! Job done
So your answer to a person breaking the law through a string of motor related offences is to amputate them? Are you okay hun?
Yeah I’m fine hun! I’m just fed up with life’s scum like this joker having no thought for his actions, how many chances dose he need? How would you feel bob if this one armed looser crashed into your family?
I’m fed up of people like him breaking the law and not having a thought for his actions as well and I’d be very angry if he crashed into one of my family. The point of the matter is, he hasn’t crashed into my family or anyone as far as I’m aware, though I might be wrong. So with that being said, even if he had crashed into someone, does that then make it reasonable to amputate someone?
Very angry! You sound like an absolute wet wipe like most the courts are these days! If you cut his arm off now then that would hopefully prevent him being able too, job done
Insulting me directly just eludes from the question so try to stay on point if you can and answer the question. Does someone breaking the law through motoring related offences justify having their arm amputated as punishment? You also seem to have me confused with the courts, I’m definitely NOT suggesting that he go without punishment and I absolutely agree that there isn’t a high enough deterrent against serial offenders like this man. However, I find fault in your conclusion that a man who has broken the law for motoring offences should then have an arm removed. Forgive me if I find your medieval mindset a bit messed up.
You okay hun?
How will he eat is dinner ?
Have you ever broken the law?? I’d deport people like you to the Falklands tomorrow where you can wallow in the remnants of Empire. Reactionary jerk.
Suppose you have never broken the law have you Bob. BULLSH!T
Imagine if he’d killed a member of ur family whilst driving like a prat?
Yeah, imagine that! The thing is though, he hasn’t has he so all I would be doing is imagining something that hasn’t happened.
The comment re amputation really shows what a reactionary country we live in, people like this would probably like to see work houses again.
Seriously?
Maybe I should chop off yours!
For what reason? I’ve not driven like a bell end with no license insurance ect…. This blokes obviously never going to learn, and locking him up for a month to then let him back out on the rds to carry on seems a waste of tax payers money, just cut his last arm off, job done no more driving, also refuse him any benifits.
I’m not sure which is more concerning your comment or the fact that 26 people liked it.
Now it’s 72 people agree that he should have his other arm cut off to stop him driving.
As I said in a previous comment, I find it pretty disturbing there are so many reactionary idiots out there. Wonder what they think of public stoning, executions, amputation & flogging in the Middle East, probably get off on it but are first to say how barbaric it is after they’ve read all about it in their Daily Mail.Bet they are all middle class white Tory voters.
Brilliant I totally agree
They should chop your fingers off in the process to prevent you from typing stupid comments.
The islands Police make me sick.
Oh, why’s that then? Because they finally caught up with this idiot? He’s going down…..yipee!!
Clearly an unbalanced individual, he needs to go to a mental institution for reasurch reasons….
I mean, he’s only got half an arm so that a given
Why should we feel sorry for him being born with a disability. Many have to suffer far worse and yet still don’t act like a total dickwad. Maybe he was also born without a brain?
Someone who doesn’t appreciate life, his or others, needs locking up for some time to allow him to grow up. Why does he dress like a teenager with a man bag ?- he’s 28yrs FFS. Why not in leg restraints ( can’t have hand cuff’s for obvious reasons) he could of tried to run !.
I’d speak my true feelings but the old bill would be round mine for “discrimination”
Oh dear, he’s in for it this time.
The judge will throw the book at him. £2.15p fine at least, and a bag of sweets.
That will have him.
Thats a fable and a half
His defence lawyer will no doubt claim that his client is Armless
“NOTORIOUS CRIMINAL” He’ll probably see that and feel like he’s some sort of mob boss or something! I think ‘little disabled broke petty criminal’ is more fitting
Notorious criminal? no, just notorious worthless loser, so far its luck the waster hasnt killed a decent person, only the people whos driving ability has enabled them to avoid this cretin and his inability to drive deserve credit for the fact it hasnt happened yet.
Judges can’t keep handing out driving bans to an already disqualified driver, that’s bloody stupid. Hope this guy gets put away for a couple of years. Take him off the roads before he involves an innocent person in his stupid, selfish antics. Well done to the Police for getting this idiot.
Not the first time nor will it be the last we will be reading about him through a news source. Let’s hope next time it isn’t where he has hit someone and they are either passed or seriously injured. He needs banging up and every offence taken into consideration. Not just a silly 5 min behind bars. Something substantial.
We can only hope that not if, but when he cripples or kills someone it is a Bob type person.
The reason WHY he is not jailed for long, is the same reason that countless small craft cross the channel daily.
Our prisons are full of imported criminals now, so we can no longer jail our own for meaningful terms, UNLESS they are more serious than of those awaiting sentences, and trust me, THAT takes some doing.
I suggest that chopping his arm off for motor related crimes is a bit too far and in response, you hope that people like myself are crippled or killed by criminals like him? I’ve never said that he shouldn’t be put away for a long time, I’ve just said that cutting a person’s arm off is very extreme. Wishing death upon someone is a big deal, I can only hope you know this.
What an absolute ass the law really is
Silly old handy pandy, He wont escape the long arm of the law,
Looks like another misguided soul in need of some guidance and a break in life.
The TROLL is back, just ignore the stupid comments QK makes
Why hype this up by saying Notorious – I have never heard of him. Obviously he has been caught numerous times and then released – why if he is so Notorious? Lock him up and throw away the key as he obviously hasn’t learnt or been helped back into civilised life by his past actions.
Another troublesome Caulkhead.
William FYI hes not an islander only been here for about 3 years and some of that was spent in prison. Hes from oop north.
Hi, I’d just like to apologise for my comments. I didn’t think through what I was saying. I can’t believe I’d dare to say that chopping someone’s arm off for motoring crimes is too far or wrong. I’ve learnt my lesson and truly understand what it is to be a true Island Echo keyboard warrior. To you special people who hope I’m crippled or killed for saying what I did or to the ones who think I’m a wet wipe, keep it up, you’re doing yourselves proud. Love you all x
This isn’t the first time I’ve been on one of these forums, explaining things about this particular recidivist. My late wife was his Godmother.
The main thing about him is he doesn’t realise he’s doing wrong. Forget this nonsense about wanting to prove himself as good as an abled bodied person, that’s just some poxy defence lawyer putting excuses to the judge. On a previous excuse for his behaviour, his lawyer told him to say he was affected by his Godmothers illness. Utter rubbish. The man has no conscience. These ridiculous terms in prison are pointless. He comes out no different. He needs education. He needs to be shown that his actions have consequences. Our judicial system is ridiculous.
