POLICE NEGOTIATORS ATTEND CLIFF EDGE INCIDENT


20140309-205015.jpgOfficers from Hampshire Constabulary have successfully prevented a person from jumping off of a clifftop in Lake this evening (Sunday).

Police were called to the scene at Lake Cliff Gardens near to Skew Bridge at around 16:20 following reports of a person acting suspiciously on the cliff edge. Local officers responded to the seaside location in a bid to speak to the unknown person and prevent a tragedy occurring.

Island Echo understands a specialist negotiator from the mainland was brought over to the Island by an MoD RIB at around 17:30, docking at Ryde Pier Head before being transferred to the unfolding situation at Lake.

20140309-205104.jpgSeveral other Police units supported the initial responders, aswell as paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Rescue Teams from Ventnor Coastguard.

Thankfully, the person was talked down and emergency services left the scene at 19:30.

It is currently unclear if the incident was connected to reports of a missing person in nearby Apse Heath, which resulted in the National Police Air Service helicopter assisting in a search. It has been confirmed that the missing person was located at around 16:30, the same time Police responded to Lake Cliff Gardens.
