The Isle of Wight Council has turned down a major planning application to transform the historic Grade I listed Norris Castle in East Cowes into a luxury hotel. It was more than 2 years ago that Norris Castle Estate Group submitted an application to redevelop the entire site to include a hotel, a wellness centre, a boathouse, restaurant facilities and residential housing on the adjoining Springhill Estate. The plan would have seen some 11 listed buildings protected for future generations. Local uproar saw revised plans submitted, with the matter finally coming before the local authority’s planning committee for a decision last night (Tuesday). However, councillors went against the idea and refused to issue planning permission. Many of the objections have revolved around extra traffic in East Cowes, particularly around the Esplanade. Others seem disgruntled that the area – currently inaccessible to members of the public – would become somewhere for the rich and famous. Concerns have also been raised about the loss of heritage, but developers say more than £7million of repairs need to be carried out. It is unclear what will now happen to the listed buildings across the Norris estate. It was 9 years ago that Clynt Wellington paid £4.7million for the 187-acre plot, which overlooks The Solent.

About time we had a new Council, totally agree they lie all the time. This estate will be taken over by Travelers and our teenage minority with vandalise the buildings eventually setting fire to them and all will be worthless and damage East Cowes more,it will go back to being the slum and dump it used to be. Imagine if Redfunell pulled out !.

It is a pity that the owners at the time would not sell to Queen Victoria, as apparently it was her first choice and on refusal she acquired another Estate and had Osbourne House built. Had they sold to her today it would be in the capable hands of English Heritage and kept up to scratch. Still a mainland company but never objected to. It’s sad to think what might now happen… We are not amused… 🙁
I guess calling the development a luxury resort – hotel to boot would be courting a disaster for the local NIMBY’s. Better still, call it a retirement village for those over 55 and offer the same sort of facilities. It would be interesting to see how that idea would float? All in a name I guess?
