An Isle of Wight bank branch wants to cut back on counter space — which could lead to longer queues at Santander in Newport.
Plans have been submitted to refurbish it, but also to shrink the number of counters — from 5 to 2.
There could be a TV screen in the window, running adverts and more 24 hours a day — though the bank says it won’t be as bright at night. Meanwhile, the branch’s lit-up hanging signs could be replaced with new ones on a timed switch.
Santander’s only branch on the Island, on the corner of Pyle Street and St James’ Street, could also see a new self-service room installed. The international bank closed its Ryde High Street branch 4 years ago.
If plans submitted to the Isle of Wight Council are approved, a new waiting area would be added, the cash machines would stay while the timber Grade II listed shopfront would be repaired. The plans say the branch would be modernised and rooms redecorated.
Planning agent, LOM said modern materials would be used with discretion, where appropriate to the character of the building and its listed status.

Same as every other bank then, bit like doctors, don’t want to see you face to face. Suppose to be progress but just causes more agro for the customers!
