Sunnycott Caravan Park in Gurnard will be allowed to extend after all — nearly 2 years after it was first denied. It comes as a Government watchdog overturned the Isle of Wight Council’s decision to refuse permission. Owner, Lynn Wildey, was looking to add 5 new caravans to the park in Gurnard, on a currently grassed area, but was denied the extension from 21 to 26 units in 2022. The Isle of Wight Council refused the application a couple of months after submission saying it would have an adverse impact on neighbours along Rew Street and the character and appearance of the area. Fears had been raised at the time by neighbours saying, among other things, it was an overdevelopment and it would impact negatively on wildlife. However, on Mrs Wildey’s appeal of the council’s decision, the government’s Planning Inspectorate has recently agreed to the caravan park’s extension with 12 conditions. 1 of the conditions is that the new holiday units cannot be used for anything other than as holiday accommodation. Another is that if the units are no longer required they should be permanently removed from the site. Overall, the Planning Inspectorate said the scale of the proposed development would be subservient to the existing caravan park. It says the new units are modest in size and have a simple design, looking the same as the current caravans on the site. The inspectorate said the caravans being on site would not be prominent in the landscape or urbanise the area. Public views of the new units would ‘virtually be hidden’, it said, by both the existing greenery and the adjoining properties facing onto Rew Street. The Government body said although there is a likelihood of increased noise and disturbance from holidaymakers, it would be unlikely to create such an unacceptable level which would be harmful to the living conditions of neighbours. The internal layout of the caravan park will be reconfigured to make way for the new units and a road loop created to allow bigger vehicles to get around the site.

No surprise there, the inspectorate always do. Councilors waste their time working for their constituents.
So much for the much vaunted “localism”.
The only acceptable justification would have been to provide low-cost residential accommodation – which is, of course, specifically excluded. Probably the usual case of “my lawyer’s bigger than your lawyer”.
More likely, my lawyer is brighter than your lawyer

No to a few caravans for holiday lets, but yes to 1000’s of houses across the island – wonder why and who is paying who
Nice to see they bothered to apply for planning in the first place. I don’t ever recall planning being applied for at Old Bank End Farm, with their yurts, toilet & shower block, in a SSSI area & AONB.
There should be a condition of planning to stop these being used only as holiday let’s and not as temporary accommodation.
Half of the site is filled with those in temporary accommodation paid for by the council and some have been there years.
Holiday let only during summer season then we won’t have to listen to the constant noise and inhale the smell of weed.
This site is mostly full of ex council house skanks that have been booted out of houses paid for by taxpayers and now still being paid for by taxpayers, feel for the residents along there
Perhaps get your facts right before commenting your derogatory views. Ex council House skanks…more like people that have been screwed over by PRIVATE landlords selling properties from underneath them! Not all people in temporary accommodation are ‘skanks’ as you so eloquently put it. Give your head a wobble and perhaps learn some compassion while you’re at it!
No sorry I’m wrong, not all of them are skanks, just the vast majority are, they bring areas down, like it or not it’s true, I unfortunately have to work in housing association property’s regularly so see how they live! Trust me I wouldn’t be staying on that campsite on holiday with the rotters staying there!!
Could be useful publicity if they want it and if they don’t and it’s not true it could prove very costly writing it.
Skank an unpleasant person, especially a woman who has sex with a lot of different people, often a sex worker.
