A West Wight pensioner who was caught driving in Salisbury whilst more than 3.5x the drink drive limit has been banned from getting behind the wheel for 30 months.
65-year-old Graham Dean Morgan, of Bay Road in Freshwater, appeared before Magistrates on Friday charged with 1 count of drink driving.
The court heard from prosecutor Liz Miller that on Sunday 4th December, at around 17:50, PC Pankhurst spotted Morgan’s black BMW X3 whilst travelling along the A36 at South Newtown near to The Bell Inn pub. By the time the officer had turned around to catch up with the BMW, Morgan had pulled over in a nearby bus stop.
Ms Miller explained to the court that Morgan had been reported as a missing person from Hampshire and was therefore being sought by Police.
When officers approached the car, they were soon hit by the smell of alcohol and located a half full bottle of gin in the driver’s door.
Morgan was taken to Melksham custody centre where he blew 126 of the evidential breathalyser – the legal limit being 35. This did not take place until 20:02 though, more than 2 hours after Morgan had been stopped in the south of Wiltshire.
Graham Morgan represented himself in proceedings and said that he had nothing to add to the Probation Service’ pre sentence report, which he described as accurate.
Magistrates handed the 65-year-old a 30-month driving ban and a 12-month community order with 25 rehabilitation days. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £114 surcharge.
The Probation Service had originally suggested making Morgan subject to an alcohol abstinence requirement but it was decided that wasn’t appropriate due to an upcoming hip operation.

Why call him a pensioner when he is only 65, shame he didnt get a ban plus a retake of test now that would be a lesson taught and should be given to all drink/drug drivers.
He should also be re-tested at the end of the ban his driving is atrocious
Pensioner?!? He’s only 60!
Pathetic sentence, but he obviously has a mental problem.
You sure he’s a pensioner the age does question this as he isn’t old enough for state pension!
