The leader of the Isle of Wight Council has survived to see another day after a motion of no confidence against her was withdrawn tonight (Wednesday).
Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, who has been in charge of the authority since May 2021, was set to face a motion of no confidence as part of tonight’s Full Council meeting.
It had been tabled by Councillor Chris Jarman — formerly a member of Cllr Peacey-Wilcox’s Alliance Administration and now leader of Empowering Islanders — but was withdrawn after the new Conservative group leader at County Hall, Councillor Suzie Ellis, said it did not reflect the approach she is taking with the party.
Cllr Jarman’s motion sought to remove Cllr Peacey-Wilcox and create a coalition cabinet under a Conservative leadership.
Speaking tonight, however, he said Cllr Ellis had told him they would not take the opportunity tonight to remove the leader and cabinet.
He said more time had been requested to further determine the policy and structure of the proposed coalition and respecting the request, he withdrew the motion.
Cllr Ellis thanked Cllr Jarman for withdrawing it and said the current motion did not reflect the steps the party will be taking going forward.
The challenge to Cllr Peacey-Wilcox’s leadership came after a turbulent few months within the Alliance Administration, losing four members and vacating 2 crucial cabinet positions — finance and adult social care.

Wow looks like the brown envelopes were dished out rather quickly then prior to the meeting, corrupt or what, jeeeeeeez. Never mind she can now buy more dodgy dolls for her shelf.
I guess all the thumbs downers are loving the council now then. Oh well, stupidity rules then.
The only hope IW Council has is to keep as many hard-workimg, sincere people like Lora on board as possible.
Presumably “the steps the party [Cons] will be taking going forward” are all about absolute power, without having to rely on turncoats like Jarman. Let’s hope today’s by-elections show them how the voting public values the Cons.
Absolutely! Lora Peacey Wilcox is an.islander and one of the most hard working people to sit on both the IOW council and Cowes town council. Its an utter disgrace that this scalp hunt has been allowed to go on by some Tories.First it was about non existent dolls now another excuse because the Tories cannot stand not being in charge. We knew what a mess they left behind after the years they were in and now as usual want to Gaslight the new administration who are trying to sort it out. They need to be thankful that they can not be blamed for more cuts tjat are bound to come even though it will be down to there government.Let them do what they do best and heckle from the sidelines and blame everyone else.Lets send them packing in the GE !
Chris Jarman has been put back in his box … for now. But the hunger for control surely continues. Ultimate power over the island council seems to be his crazed ambition.
I have to say, as a local Councillor, she was brilliant, always replied when contacted, and went over and above( who saw the last tory lot litter picking on the beach in their spare time). She helped us enormously. The IW council has barely any money due to Govt cuts, and the mess the last lot left behind was appalling. So I’m glad she’s stayed in place, she actually does care.
Absolutely. I found her to be efficient and helpful as a local Councillor.
This move to oust the Council leader is typical of the power mad Tories. It seems to be from the top down to grass root level, corruption and lies throughout the party.
