Motorists are once again being targeted as cash cows for the Isle of Wight Council’s coffers as parking charges are to rise again – the 3rd such hike in just 3 years. Prices for parking across the Island look set to increase by 10p an hour, meaning parking for up to an hour on some streets could cost you £2.45, or £4.90 for up to 2 hours. In a long-stay car park, parking for up to 2 hours could cost £3.80. Parking charges could also be introduced on Union Street in Newport which currently allows motorists to park free for an hour. The council says it would bring the charges in to ensure a consistent approach with fees in the neighbouring New Street. In addition to increasing the hourly charge, the local authority is also proposing to increase the cost of the All Island Permits, Resident Zone Permits and On-Street Pay and Display Residents Permits by 20%. This could see the All Island Permit jump from £648 to nearly £780 for a yearly pass, after prices also rose last year. Off-street 200m radius permits could increase by 10% and Tourist Permits would be priced at 80% of the daily off-street parking charge. The new charges could come into force from April if the Isle of Wight Council’s community services director, Colin Rowland, approves the increase later this month. The council believes it could make another £431,867 in a year if the increase goes ahead. Despite putting fees up last year, the Isle of Wight Council had predicted it would fall short of parking income targets. Figures from November say there could be a £241,000 funding gap by March if income does not pick up, many due to a lack of off-street parking and All Island Parking Permits. The authority says it is required to generate additional income in 2024/25, and the parking costs would help meet general inflationary costs, cover the costs of enforcement and the maintenance of parking equipment. Without the increases, the council has warned it would need to make further reductions across its highways and transport activities. The decision, set to be made no earlier than 25th January, would see a notice of variation order drafted which would enforce the charges from April.

This is unacceptable! I have a god given right to leave my car anywhere without paying for the space it takes up!
Killing are towns I’m afraid much to much money now it’s disgusting they don’t even clean are towns so why is it going up
You really don’t understand the concept of supporting local businesses do you?
This council are just thieving b*stards. We own the council and pay council tax. There is no justification for charging us to park on land that we own. There is absolutely no justification for increasing charges every year. Stop charging us for parking. It is a total disgrace. They will be charging us to walk down the street next. Absolute thieving b*stards. We should start a local political party called “No more parking charges” and we would clean up in the council elections.
What a joke more town shops will close but perhaps the good thing will that the money could be used to fill a few pot holes or will it be used to give the council managers a big pay rise !!!
It’s been put up so much in recent years that it’s now cheaper to park in most large towns and city’s on the mainland than it is to park on this run down island.
Road parking tax going up because locals are avoiding paying.
Less car permits being brought because of the cost.
Green bin collections cost double in comparison to other Council’s and people are not renewing.
Beaches in the summer are empty due to costs of coming over and the cost of parking for the day.
When will this council open there eyes and see that if you tax tax tax then people won’t pay.
Why don’t they look at other Council’s who do things differently and have vibrant town centre’s and low parking charges and very few empty run down shops.
That would need common sense….they waste all the money on the monstrosity thats called a chain ferry and their nice gifts in brown envelopes!!
Good ol’ council, ripping us off as per usual, already the island has the most expensive parking in the country. Greed, greed and greed. Get rid of this lot.
Im pleased i dont use this scam parking malarkey
Well for a start the council could cancel that ridiculous idea for a cycle track from Ryde to Freshwater
what is there to park for most of the shops have closed Newport is just a rundown dump. ryde is just drug haven
Tory Brittan. Highest costs and tax ever yet they spend less every year on the people who do the work. Instead give it to their oil mates or send it abroad to be laundered and put into their bank accounts.
Fred, you are showing your utter ignorance and stupidity as usual. This thread is about car parking charges. We do not have a Tory council and the government do not set the island’s car parking charges.
This is backward thinking just another stab in the back for the town centre’s,all people will start to think should I pay all that money to park or order online. I can’t believe how stupid they are about time they worked with us not against us how many shops would this close
Certainly have stopped going into the towns, easier and cheaper to buy online.
Or park for free in the supermarket car parks and shop there.
We are all financially enslaved by our own cars! they cost an arm and a leg at every turn, be it tax, insurance, finance, MOT, petrol/electric, maintenance, ferry prices etc.. and yes, parking! … is it really worth owning one anymore?
Something has to give. Dr Seely MBE MP’s friends in Westminster are deliberately starving his safe seat of cash, yet the Council is legally obliged to provide services. Where do you expect they will find the money?
Do they not understand, if you keep the prices low more people will use the car parks, putting the prices up just kills the towns.
Correct Trevor they certainly don’t understand the basic economics of demand and supply. As witnessed by price hikes for other services followed by big drop in demand.
Robin greedy B’stards
Tax tax tax tax tax and more tax…..Parasites !!!
all shopkeepers must look to the council for the death of the towns.
why pay £4 parking for a couple of hours when a trip to the supermarket will give you all you want and at a cheaper price
good on you! keep putting up the council tax and parking,
everything can be bought on the internet these days, so soon there will be no visitors as nothing to see here!!
The future plan is to get motorists off the road and
close down all businesses.
They trialled this when they orchestrated the Plandemic and they
proved they could close businesses and keep people at home.
Their trial worked and now they are beginning their New World Order.
Sadly people don’t believe it and call people conspiracy theorists.
Parking at Yarmouth for five hours is £8.30 but across the water in Lymington it’s only £5.
Putting up car parking charges didn’t work last time so why the heck do the numptys do they think it will this time ???????
It will only serve to see more shop’s closing ….
Less income overall as people will shop on line ….
Instead of ripping us off ,why don’t you stop wasting our money on all the perks the staff have ???? Ie laptops mobile phones, etc etc…
And stop using car washes , a bucket and sponge can be bought for a couple of quid ,elbow grease
is all that is needed….
Far cheaper!!!!!!!
Numptys numptys numptys……
It’s not my money making up any shortfall. Just shop on-line. Needs everyone to stay away from Town Centres/car parks to make the point. Those (not me) who continue to use IWC car parks are an easy target for the useless IWC.
A lot cheaper to shop on line that way you can keep out of these rundown dumps
Our beloved council is determined to destroy our town centers and our holiday industry.
The W.E.F Plan is to get motorists off the Road.
They are doing everything possible to make it difficult
for motorists.
Just wait for Islandwide permit parking and
ULEZ and CONGESTION charges.
It will happen, don’t think it won’t
Whitby free parking until 1st March
If their council can do it, why can’t IW Council do it!,
Because IW Council are greedy thieving B’stards
Good, maybe more people will use the bus. Start thinking about the environment. Stop clogging the towns with exhaust fumes.
Says one of the tin foil hat brigade.
We Pay To Drive and We Also Have To Pay To Stop. WTF!!
