The discovery of a number of bright red distress flares falling out of the sky and continuing to burn on the ground in Newport led to a call out for HM Coastguard last night (Friday).
Members of the public discovered the marine flares burning with great intensity at Seaclose Park on the banks of the River Medina.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to conduct an investigation into the incident to ensure no persons or vessels were in difficulty. Flares are used to seek attention and are recognised as an international standard for indicating distress.
It is thought that the flares may have been stolen off of a nearby boat and set off maliciously by persons unknown.
A spokesperson for Ventnor CRT has said:
“Please never set off Red Flares unless you are in difficulty.
“If you see a sighting of a red flare dial 999 and ASK FOR COASTGUARD”.
