2 Ukrainian nationals have pleaded guilty to assisting unlawful immigration following a cross-border operation that saw a yacht intercepted off the coast of the Isle of Wight earlier this year.
43-year-old Oleksandr Yavtushenko and 37-year-old Vladyslav Cherniavskyi admitted 3 joint charges of facilitating illegal immigration when they appeared before the court in Portsmouth last week.
The pair are now due to be sentenced at Portsmouth Crown Court on 12th December.
The charges stem from an incident on 20th July when a yacht travelling from northern France was intercepted by a Border Force cutter off the Isle of Wight. Authorities found 7 people on board.
The vessel was escorted into Gosport marina in a joint operation involving the National Crime Agency, Border Force, and French law enforcement agencies.
A total of 3 Albanian males and a Vietnamese female were handed over to immigration authorities. A fifth passenger, 29-year-old Pellumb Selimi from Albania, was arrested at the scene for failing to appear in court in connection with drugs offences. He is due to appear before St Albans Crown Court.
