Nearly £700,000 has been pocketed by the Isle of Wight Council in the past 4 years from charging motorists to park overnight. Costs have doubled since the night-time fees were introduced in 2019 for motorists who want to park in an Isle of Wight Council-owned car park after 18:00. A ticket that used to cost £1 has risen to £2 and now makes the authority more than £300,000 a year. In the year the £1 fee was first charged, it made the cash-strapped authority £150,153. The following year, 2020, saw the COVID pandemic hit council budgets, and the £1 fee made less than a third of the year before – £48,662. In 2021, with the effort to recover after the pandemic, the fee made the authority £177,724. To capitalise on the Summer tourist season, the fee was increased from £1 to £2 between April and October in 2022. The council predicted the seasonal increase would net it an extra £80,000. The price increase, however, saw the council make more than £132,000 than the year before, pocketing £310,609 between 2022 and 2023. It was then agreed earlier this year to keep the fee at £2 all year round, in a move expected to make the authority an additional £36,600. The Isle of Wight Council said the overnight parking fee has helped regulate the use of car parks, with additional enforcement later into the evening and prompting motorists to park more responsibly.

Typical greedy council, I guess Jerk Jordan is rubbing his alcohol soaked hands together thinking what to buy for the office drinks cabinet. This is pure greed and nothing else.
Even Pompey don’t charge to park after 6pm.
The Island are greedy B’stards, let’s not forget they also charge
Households one of the most expensive Council taxes in England.
Tbf quite cheap storage for 2000+ kilograms of metal.
We have a right to free car storage, don’t let them take your rights!
I dont see a problem here. Why would the council supply free storage for private property?
Less than the price of a pint for all night parking in council car parks is hardly greed.
Its not in council carparks it is everywhere were
£2 to park were everywhere they have meters
its very wrong of them
So what are they doing with this money? They will be bankrupt soon. Perhaps cull all the overpaid council workers who do not do anything!
keeping floating turd afloat
Not from me never use car parks..
Well with £700.000 profit from screwing the motorist to get out of their cars, I presume there will be no need to hike the council tax this year? Oh, there will? I thought as much. The money won’t be spent on anything we want though will it?
The thieving greedy B’stards will definitely be increasing our
Council tax again next year.
The biggest crooks in the world are Governments and their corrupt Councils.
Gaz we should get a 6.7 % reduction as the council Tax is calculated on the value of your property this is why they call it a property Tax. I.O.W counci gets two bites of the cherry . They cut services then increase the Council Tax higher than the rate of inflation EVERY YEAR
These overnight charges are scandalous
Just roll out islandwide parking permits and scrap the overnight charges
Why keep stinging holidaymakers
As much as it hurts because it the council making money that they will blow on some old rubbish, £2 for parking near where you want to go isn’t bad. Most of the carparks on the island are reasonably well lit and tide.
Not on the island anymore so yes put up the parking charges that will be less they have to spend on drink and drugs
