An elderly woman has been hospitalised after being dragged to the floor in a dog attack in Freshwater this morning (Tuesday), which saw 2 others also injured.
It was just before 10:00 that emergency services were alerted to an incident on Queens Road, with reports that 3 people had been attacked by a German Shepherd-type dog – thought to only be around a year old.
Witnesses say that the out-of-control animal lunged and dragged an elderly woman to the floor, resulting in bloody injuries to her arm.
The dog then went on to attack 2 joggers as they passed nearby, with the pair receiving cuts and bruises.
The elderly woman has since been taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that the dog has now been secured and there is no ongoing risk to the public.
A spokesperson for the force has said:
“There will be an increased police presence in the area whilst our enquiries into the incident are ongoing. Anybody with any concerns can speak to an officer”.

Island Echo is told that the same animal was recently involved in an attack on a postman in the town.
What’s upsetting is that dog will likely be put down now. If it had a responsible owner this never would have happened.
Too many people get a dog breed for ‘status’ and now nothing about proper training, healthcare and socialisation.
It’s a repeated statement but I will say it anyway, there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.
Let’s hope the dog is rehomed with a good family. Wishing the woman taken to hospital a speedy recovery.

I fear that the damage is now done. This poor dog was allowed to attack a postman and then attack the poor elderly lady and 2 joggers. Will we hear the usual, ‘it is a much loved family pet that has never acted like this before’ or ‘it was mistreated before the new owners rescued it’? Whatever excuse, could anyone trust this animal with their children or even themselves? Deep down I think we all know that attacking 4 individuals within a couple of weeks is a danger sign, and one that cannot be ignored. Following the attack on the postman I would assume that the owners took some remedial training to bring it under control, and it obviously failed, as shown today. I have owned a couple of Shepherds and both went through ‘issues’ during puberty, but these were quickly controlled and trained, something missing in this case I fear.
There is a reason why the Police use Alsations to chase and ‘take down’ fleeing criminals! Not suitable to be walking our streets as pets. Lets hope those innocent people who were attacked recover soon, although the psychological effects will sadly be long lasting I fear!

A dog lunged forcefully at my throat -twice in a split second- some years ago outside my house. It was wearing a muzzle or I might not be here now. All the girl could say was soory! One day it will slip out without the muzzle and have somebody.

Any owner not keeping their dog on a lead needs to receive
HEAVY fines and have the dog taken away from them.
These attacks are becoming more frequent. I used to like dogs but now I dread walking the pathwsys as dogs are always off the lead & ‘only playing’ when they jump up at you
The island police have been informed about dogs off leads and untrained dogs owned in freshwater by drug suppliers and dealers but they have and will not do anything as these people are working for the corrupt lying police selling their drugs lining their pockets freshwater is a disgrace.
