A Sandown man became ‘obsessed’ with his ex-partner, making up to 89 calls a day and throwing bottles at her car, a court has heard
Paul Cheverton, 35, of Medeway in Sandown, admitted a single count of harassment without violence when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court yesterday (Tuesday).
Prosecuting, Liz Miller, told the court that on the 10th January, a woman told Police that her ex-partner had bombarded her with calls and text messages and made several visits to her home address.
The court heard how Cheverton and the pair used to work with one another before they met again when they both applied for the same job at a local holiday park. In weeks that followed, Cheverton became ‘obsessed’ with the woman who ‘eventually gave in’ to his advances in May 2024 – the court heard.
Ms Miller told the court that the relationship lasted around a week before Cheverton was told that things were over. Cheverton proceeded to visit the woman’s address on several occasions following the break-up and caused damage to the woman’s car by kicking and throwing glass bottles at it.
Cheverton made threats that he would harm himself and sometimes tried calling her – despite being told not to – as many as 89 times a day.
In a victim statement read aloud in court, the victim said she was ‘vulnerable’ and that her ‘self-worth had hit rock bottom’.
Defending Cheverton, Jim Osborne, told the court that the case would benefit greatly from a pre-sentence report.
Magistrates agreed with this notion and so the case was adjourned until the 5th September.
