UPDATED: Emergency services are this morning attending the seafront at East Cowes after a body was spotted floating in 2ft of water.
Cowes RNLI lifeboat, Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Teams, Police and Ambulance crews are attending the incident.
The unidentified body of a middle-aged man has been recovered by the lifeboat crew of Cowes RNLI and placed into a body bag.
The deceased male has been taken ashore at Old Castle Point awaiting recovery after being discovered close to the sea wall in around 2ft of water.
Patrick Moreton, at the helm of the lifeboat, has said:
“Two members of the crew, Heather Boden and Graham Creagh, went into the water to assist the police to recover the body which was taken to a nearby police van.”
The 999 response was issued after the ‘object’ was spotted off of Old Castle Point at around 09:35.
Police have cordoned off an area of the Esplanade beyond the children’s play area.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY 22ND JANUARY: The identity of the body found in East Cowes on 14th January has been confirmed as Bruce Thompson, 44, of Trinity Street in Ryde. Mr Thompson was an informal patient at Sevenacres.
An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned until 6th May.
