Oakfield Reserves beat a young Ryde Saints Reserves side by a single goal in a hard-fought and competitive derby game at Slade Road on Wednesday evening.
Oakfield opened the scoring after 16 minutes when the powerful forward, Chris Wallace, powered through on the right-hand side to send a low shot across the face of the goal and into the far corner of the Ryde Saints net. (1-0)
Ryde Saints equalized in the 61st minute through a Matt Walters header from 5 yards out, the cross having been supplied by Jack Levell. (1-1)
The winning goal for Oakfield came in the 75th minute, when Chris Wallace took the ball from outside the penalty area, rounded the Ryde keeper and slotted the ball into the back of an empty net. (2-1)
After the match, Oakfield Reserves manager, Dean Ball, said:
“It was a tight local derby game between 2 competitive sides and the 3 points are very welcome.
“I thought we panicked when they scored and was thankful when our 2nd goal went in.”
Ryde Saints Reserves manager, Ryan Lacey, thought his side had been unlucky to lose to a goal he thought had been offside. Of his side’s performance, Ryan said:
“I was pleased with the lads and especially pleased with the performance of 2 sixteen-year-olds, Ollie Sweatman and Szymon Sadel.”
Victory leaves Oakfield in 7th place in the Combination 1 table, 3 points ahead of Ryde rivals, Saints, who are now 10th.
