A picket line will be established outside St Mary’s Hospital next week in support of fair pay for nursing staff on the Isle of Wight.
Nurses from Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust, who deliver drug and alcohol support on the Isle of Wight, will be demonstrating their fight for fair pay and safe staffing. They will be joined by staff from Solent NHS Trust – and welcome any other nurses to join them on the picket line.
The picket line, which will be in place between 07:00-18:00 on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th January, is being organised by members of the Royal College of Nurses.
However, RCN members working for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust are unable to strike as numbers did not allow a ballot to take place.

In the mean time, all the private sector workers, such as shop staff, those running their own businesses, those in industrial businesses, don’t get the luxury of striking as there isn’t the revenue to pay extra and are already being paid less than public sector nurses, doctors, firemen, teachers etc.
these public sector workers really should try living in the real world, where you struggle on minimum wage, get top up from benefits with no option to strike as the job and business go at the same time if they do
get back to work and stop whining.
You utter scumbag.
Everything that is happening with the NHS is deliberate action by the Tories to force privatization.
The difference between a nurse and ‘shop staff’ is that they are highly trained and, unlike shop staff, could mean the difference between you dying or not. Your comparison is deliberately inaccurate so to undermine their claims.
Makes me wonder if you’re part of the Tories propaganda army. (Yes, that is real, the tory party organizes them to post on social media)
You are correct. These Tories are destroying the NHS on purpose.
So many idiots still trust this Government.
Divide and Conquer bye getting all workers to queral amongst themselves.
Whist forgeting to blame the real problem, The Rich and the very very Rich and the whole f’n System…………. UP THE WORKERS, UP ALL WORKERS !
Well said. They wouldn’t survive in the real world
What world do you imagine they see every day inside A/E? Total calm, tranquil piped music as they float effortlessly around their patients in serene fashion, hours to write up reports and get a lunch break, finish on time? Back to reality “Silly Polly” patients lined up all down the corridors, lucky to get a teabreak on a meant to be 8 hour shift on feet all of that time whilst deciding who needs what drugs and children screaming because that’s what they do in pain… That is the real world “Stupid Tory Polly” thank your Tory gov for that and destroying the NHS which is what they have always wanted to do!. I bet you think “Seldom seen Seeley is the reincarnation of a god”?get a grip Polly the NHS is being dismantled in front of us!.
Private sector can unionise as well.
and when the small business/restaurant/shop closes because the staff went on strike, asking for more money that isn’t there to begin with – they can look forward to a large pay cut on job seekers allowance
doesn’t work john – you know that already or you should
Why are you so against people who want to better their life? Shouldn’t you focus on the people who stop all those you mentioned from getting better AS WELL? The government is responsible for Brexit, inflation, minimal wage and even unionisation laws.
“Divide and conquer” comment here is very accurate.
Better your life? That would be choosing a career that has a better pay packet no? Instead they choose nursing knowing what they’re going into. Let’s just let people die so they can have an extra quid which is then going to be added on to our tax. Yeah makes perfect sense
If you don’t like your wage. Join a union. Don’t try and attack other people whoa re standing up for themselves.
Without nurses were all screwed.
Why should there be drug or alcohol support, the amount of money being wasted on “wasters” who decide to go on taking drugs and drinking is ridiculous. Sick and tired of seeing druggies taking the p**s by getting the “free” handouts to help them with the addiction, which those of us who pay taxes are paying for.
self inflicted
You are also paying politicians vast amounts of money to keep you poor and stupid.
This is the most ill written comment. Shows a complete lack of understanding. It can happen to any of us. You assume all addicts all have no money? Not true. You assume they give nothing back? Not true. You believe it’s self inflicted, it’s trauma inflicted.
Is lung cancer not self inflicted from smoking? Diabetes from eating? Broken leg from football??
Thanks for sharing, corp media have been instructed not to publish when and where picket likes will be operating. I will be there showing my support. I owe my like to the NHS, and because of the NHS I have been able to thrive and pay an eye watering amount of tax. No NHS I would be dead and the government would have missed out on revenue from my multi million pound online business. What goes around comes around. Kill the NHS you kill the UK.
and then your alarm clock went off and you woke up.
get real fred – it doesn’t matter what job you do, a loaf of bread still costs the same for all – poorly paid shop staff, waiters, waitresses, call centre staff – you know the service workers that do all the jobs that make your life easier that you look down your nose at, still need to eat and pay bills – they can’t strike as they lose their jobs and the business goes also.
next time a striking doctor or other whiny NHS public sector worker is in a local shop buying food, perhaps they think, – I wonder how this counter assistant on minimum wage is coping with the bills that I easily afford, but I am on strike for more money.
What are you talking about?when have nurses ever said shop workers don’t server money. Why is it us OR them.
Nurses do deserve better. We simply cannot retain Enough to operate safe staffing levels.
I always try and spend my money in local shops and the local economy (hard ATM, as for many).
Especially when they choose to go into the nursing profession and so the training knowing the outcome. It baffles me how people make their own decisions then want to blame others for it.
Secondary picketing is illegal so, even if they work here, if they are actually employed by the Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust or the Solent NHS Trust, then that is where they are allowed to picket and, could possibly, run the risk of arrest if they picket here.
What utter Bollox your spouting !
What rubbish, this is where they work.
They work at the hospital, it is a primary picket.
Irrespective of ‘place of employment’ versus ‘place of work’, there is no RCN mandate for an official picket at the IW NHS Trust. Thus a secondary picket.
If the RCN are organising it they have to appoint a Picket Supervisor who has to be easily identified, issue them with a letter stating that it is a legal picket and advise the police who it is.
Get any of that wrong and they are going to undermine support for the nurses as some of the comments on here already indicate.
They get paid more than most people on the island. Everyone is suffering so why shouldn’t they? I hope it is freezing cold and pissing it down on the day.
Well, attitude like this will certainly encourage more people to go into medical profession to ease the shortage of staff at a hospital and heal you 😉
Hey maybe if they didn’t fire everyone who didn’t jab themselves they wouldn’t be struggling right now
Spot on Paul….from a retired member of NHS. I would never EVER have left my patients.
Good for them.
Brexit had brought one thing for sure: more power to the hands of skilled workers who are now even harder to replace than ever before. They would be mad not to require better pay in the current market dynamics.
Service as usual then, probly won’t notice much difference as that place is diabolical most days.
Agree, it is full of bed blockers like yourself.
The whole country should go on strike imo.
Tell me, how am I to be considered a bed blocker when I’m able and working full time to pay tax, and more tax, to support the benefit cheats and other low life? Ya bloody stupid idiot.
Well, you call yourself “Old School” and you sound like a grumpy old git, so it’s an easy mistake to make.
So £30 / £45yr + Full sick pay + 6.5 weeks annual leave not bad at all now look at HDA or the cleaners a lot lower pay Look at care home workers £10 hr no sick pay. stop milking it and get back to work
no one ever talks about the amount of money the goverment spend use of tax pays money on there so called second homes thousands they claim of our money so they can have 2 homes. STOP that save thousands
Good lord. The number of spineless Daily Mail/red rag readers trolling this page is unreal.
I’ll bet they are the first ones to whinge about not being able to get GP or hospital appointments.
They would do well to remember that the entire premise of free market capitalism is that competitive pay attracts and retains the best workforce. At least, that’s what the Tories said when they were scrapping caps on bankers bonuses.
And that is exactly what is happening with the exodus of NHS workers to private agencies.
More pay, less stress. No brainer.
Yet the Daily Mail gammons bleat about that, too. You’d think that, as true Blue Tories, they’d applaud them but, no, they demand they are forced to work for the State on State dictated wages.
Your basic gammon is a communist at heart, it seems.
