An East Cowes man caught driving whilst disqualified, twice, just weeks after being handed a 36-month driving ban, has somehow avoided an immediate jail term.
Alexander Currie, 40, of South Bank Road, admitted 2x driving whilst disqualified, 2x driving without insurance and 1x drink driving at a previous Magistrates’ Court hearing in December 2024.
Addressing the court at a sentencing hearing on Friday, Lauren McConnell said that on the afternoon of 8th December, Currie, driving a Ford Fiesta, was stopped on Binstead Hill. When questioned, he admitted to officers that he was driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.
Then, just 4 days later, at around 00:45, Currie was found sleeping on the rear seats of his Fiesta on Brocks Copse Road in East Cowes. Police suspected that he may have been drinking,g and so a roadside breath test was conducted. The lowest reading supplied by Currie was 64ug/l – nearly double the legal limit.
Mrs McConnell told the court that Currie was handed a 36-month driving ban in November 2024 after admitting drink driving in Newport in October.
Defending the unemployed 40-year-old, Oscar Vincent told the court that on 8th December, Currie was on his way to pick up some halogen heaters and that on the 12th, he left his house after having an argument with his partner.
Mr Vincent noted that since the incident, Currie has taken steps to try and address his behaviour.
After lengthy deliberations lasting around 30 minutes, Magistrates handed Currie an 8-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was handed a 12-month community order with 20 rehabilitation days and a 120-day alcohol monitoring requirement attached.
Magistrates said that Currie – who let out an audible sigh when he was sentenced – had shown ‘complete contempt’ for any previous court order, and so they subjected him to a further driving ban of 48 months. He was fined £85 and ordered to pay a £154 surcharge fee.

Obviously this Numpty does not respect law and order and
will keep re-offending!
Needs banging up!
Our roads will never be safe whilst such persons are on
our roads, even though they shouldn’t be.
So have an argument with your partner and then
you can break the law.
The island is not known as Isle of Joke for nothing.
Roll on devolution, we need rules, not
Mickey Mouse rules.
The island needs Sadiq Khan in charge
he will bring a new dimension to the island.
Yes, the third world
I was starting to take your comments seriously until you mentioned that cretin Khan.
Too be honest I dislike Khan, but I am
starting to realise he can stop people
speeding, unlike the Numpty’s who are
running the island, they couldn’t stop a bus
at a bus stop.
Who actually controls the island
Mickey or Minnie Mouse!, hence we need
devolution- WE NEED MAINLAND RULES.
Look at the Numpty speeding Motorcyclist
who attacked an elderly man.
The Motorcyclist wouldn’t be speeding in
Khan’s London, there are rules.
Omg this scum should off went to prison
So how does he get away with it?Where is the deterrent for him to not do exactly the same next week? He was disqualified and had no insurance! I’m so fed up reading about these idiotic people.
I call the island, Isle of Joke
It is lawless and clueless
Caught twice in 4 days, then why didn’t the police seize the car the first time?
Trouble is the dreggs of society will never be taken off the streets as there is no
prison spaces available
Build new prisons then.
It hasn’t been mentioned in the report but was his car taken away, crushed, and the scrap value given to the police?
Fit a tag, report every day for street cleaning duties.
