Emergency services and Island Roads operatives were kept busy throughout last night and into the early hours of this morning (Sautrday) as a band of heavy rain lashed down across the Island.
Properties in Garden Way, Pan and The Strand in Ryde were flooded with firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service working alongside Island Roads to help clear as much flood water as possible – two notorious areas for flooding.
On the outskirts of Ryde, Two-way temporary traffic lights were put into action on Smallbrook Lane at around 21:00 last night (Friday) after efforts to decrease flood levels near to Smallbrook bridge failed, resulting in one side of the carriageway being shut. A gully sucker was used to clear over 56,000 litres of water, however water levels continued to rise.
Meanwhile, flood signs were put out across the Island at Quarr Hill, Ryde; St George’s Way, Newport and Military Road, Brook.
High tide was anticipated to cause coastal flooding in Newport, Cowes and East Cowes, however domestic and commercial properties were saved from flooding.
This morning, contractors are working to clear a fallen tree at Undercliff Drive, Ventnor. The road is blocked while work gets underway to clear the blockage.
