Wootton Bridge could be closed up for to 4 months after an inspection of the bridge has revealed some ‘serious structural weaknesses’, meaning repair work will need to be undertaken just as the summer holidays begin.
Although the full extent of the works is yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated that large vehicles including lorries and buses will face up to a staggering 18-mile advised diversion each way via Arreton, Sandown, Brading and Ryde, which is expected to have a significant impact on local businesses, deliveries from the mainland and coaching holidays.
A full report on the extent of the weaknesses is due next week, when decisions will then be made on the options available to the Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads. Island Echo understands a weight or speed restriction will come into force immediately – most likely by Monday – ahead of all the necessary approvals and consents being secured, with talks of the repairs taking between 1 and 4 months to complete.
It is said the bridge handles over 20,000 vehicle movements a day.
Should the bridge need to be closed to all traffic, regular motorists will face a 6.6 mile diversion through Havenstreet and Binstead, with other flows of traffic using Ashey and The Downs. If a full road closure does come into force, significant delays are expected in Sandown and Lake, as well as Ashey Road and The Downs.
It is currently unknown to what extent the works will affect Southern Vectis Routes 4 and 9, school bus routes and The Downs Breezer. The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service will also be affected by the weight limit or closure, with fire appliances unable to use the main through road resulting in a longer response time.
