A new, free festival is heading to Newport on Saturday 7th September as part of the National Heritage Open Days scheme to celebrate the heritage of the Island’s county town. The whole town is getting involved with shop owners discovering the history of their shops and creating window displays to reflect their findings. The Masonic Club and St John’s Church will be open for guided tours. 64 High Street will be open with an exhibition about the First Newport Scouts and the Museum of Island History will be open for free. The Classic Motor Show will have hundreds of classic vehicles on show on Newport Quay. Newport Minster will have creative activities with artist Trudie Wilson, the Isle of Wight Council Archaeology team and Finds Liaison Officer will be bringing some items from Newport’s History. Unity Hall, IW Family History Society and CWGC will be there to help you discover your own historical connections. Hannah Griffiths, of Newport Minster, says: “We’re really excited to be working with so many different groups across Newport to bring this free event to the local community. It is a great opportunity for people find their connection to Newport” says Hannah Griffiths from Newport Minster.
