23-year-old Thomas Phillips has been banned from driving after a Police motorcyclist smelt a strong waft of cannabis coming from his car.
It was on 23rd January this year that Phillips was driving along St George’s Way in Newport when he caught the attention of an officer from the Roads Policing Unit.
The officer followed Phillips’ Citroen Saxo into the car park of Asda and pulled up alongside, once again experiencing a strong smell of the Class B drug cannabis. A roadside drugs wipe was then carried out, which returned a positive result.
Blood analysis later revealed the level of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (cannabis) in Phillips’ system to be 7ug/l – the specified limit being 2.
The court heard that Phillips, a local boat builder, had previous driving offences relating to no insurance in 2019 and speeding in 2021 – which prompted Magistrates to describe the 23-year-old’s recent driving record as ‘horrendous’.
Thomas Phillips, of Furrlongs in Newport, was disqualified from driving f0r 12 months, fined £352 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £35 surcharge.
Actually the cut off is 2 The legit limit is 1.
the specified limit being 2.–there should be a zero limit
Same for alcohol . In fact it should be illegal altogether, the amount of resources wasted on drinkers is unreal..
Scum convicted of drink driving or driving under the influence of drugs should be banned for life, they are a danger to all road users, it would also help if the vehicle they were driving was crushed in addition to heavy fines as all they get now is a slap on the wrist.
Way too many scum bags think it’s ok to drive a car having consumed alcohol or taken/sniffed some crappy drug.
The law needs updating as so many think it’s ok. Should be an automatic 5 year ban and a £2000 fine. If they are claiming benefits, take it at source so there is no excuse they can’t pay.
These idiots are a liability and need a proper deterrent.
