Two of the Isle of Wight’s largest GP practices – Newport Health Centre and Cowes Medical Centre – have announced plans to merge by the end of 2025 in a move aimed at strengthening patient care and service access.
The merger will formally bring together the 2 well-established sites to create a single, more resilient organisation. Patients have been reassured that no action is required on their part, and they will remain registered with their current practice.
In a joint letter to patients, the GP partners and teams at both practices said the merger is supported by all partners and is designed to improve care, increase access to services, and ensure a sustainable future for local healthcare.
The letter explains that, while the merger is a formal step, the 2 centres have already successfully worked together on several projects in recent years.
Patients are being told:
- They will continue to request appointments as usual
- Access to appointments is expected to improve
- Some appointments may be offered at either site, depending on availability
- Operational changes may occur as best practices are shared
The practices have also committed to maintaining high-quality, patient-centred care and ensuring continuity wherever possible. Drop-in sessions are being planned to keep patients informed and offer opportunities to ask questions and share feedback.
A spokesperson for the practices said:
“Our priority remains your health and wellbeing. We believe this merger will strengthen our ability to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our community.”
The merger is set to complete by the end of 2025, with further updates expected in the coming months.

More cuts is the real reason
The usual knee-jerk reaction to anything new. Merging practiceswill enable them to reduce overheads and probably provide more services in-house, which should improve things for patients, not make them worse.
Very true, especially with all the NHS employees
who are still shirking, oops I mean working from home.
That is why they can merge.
