The new Tesco store that is to come to Newport High Street may be able to sell alcohol from 06:00 all the way up to midnight 7-days-a-week.
Permission is being sought, as more detail about the new store for Newport High Street is unveiled, with the supermarket giant planning to move into the former Laura Ashley shop, on the corner of St Thomas’s Square.
In recent weeks, proposals have been submitted by Tesco to join together 35 and 36 Newport High Street to provide its 6th Island branch. But no date has been set for when works may start.
Detailed plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council requesting signs – some of which will be lit up – as well as fascia panels, vinyl advertising posters and window frosting.
A licensing application has also been submitted by Tesco, which seeks permission to supply alcohol all hours the store will be open — between 6am and midnight.
View the plans, 22/01244/ADV, on the council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 26th August. You can also view the licensing application and have your say on the council’s licensing register until 26th August by searching 22/01104/LAPNEW.
The shop has been empty since homeware and clothing store Laura Ashley moved out, in 2020, when the national retailers saw administrators appointed due to pressures created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not a responsible request from Tesco. The poor Police will have even more drunks and anti social behaviour to deal with.
No, don’t grant them this licence.
Too much booze around already. Will make Newport even more of a no-go zone.
Yep we totally need more cheap alcohol available for longer hours in the town centre – perfect to help fuel the usual drunk t*ats and chavs for their fist and bottle fights, after which they can liberally eject their stomach contents in shop doorways etc.
Bring it on.
So the convenience store opposite with closed, great one in one out
Great news. I can grab a couple on the way to work!
Already loads of drunken chavs shouting and leaving glass and bottles everywhere, don’t want anymore thanks.
Have we not got enough food shops here, its not exactly going to regenerate Newport, is there any need to be selling alcohol so early just mean more policing will be needed around town.
Exactly. Its job creation. What’s not to like?
I’m sure the number of jobs will be the same without the alcohol licence.
The council’s alcohol licensing committee and the police get paid I think.
The council should not grant an alcohol licence. Tesco do not need to sell cheap alcohol to make the store viable
If the Council need convincing then some of them should go on patrol with the Police on a few late night shifts.
Alcohol destroys lives and makes town centres no go areas for normal people
The cost of the mayhem is huge and the resulting carnage is a disgrace to the Island
I would like to see all alcohol licence renewals carefully considered and late off sales limited to 7pm island wide. Responsible drinkers would adapt and buy theirs in the daytime or early evening
Alcohol fuelled violence is unacceptable.
-Have they banned drinking alcohol in the streets yet ? If not, why not ?
As if we need more booze. More fights, more stabbings. Agree with everyone here
Find it weird how things have changed in quite a short time. No shops used to be open on Sundays (day of rest), now 6am till midnight. In many ways Sat and Sun have just morphed into one. The boozers don’t need a rest anymore obviously.
Tesco selling cheap booze? Lol The chavs cant afford tesco after 6pm so dont worry everybody
Finally, I can grab a 4 pack of special brew first thing in the morning. That will make teaching easier!
