Tesco is welcoming customers to its new Express store in Newport, with the doors having opened for the first time on Tuesday. In 2022, the supermarket giant obtained permission to move into the former Laura Ashley outlet on the High Street, opposite Central Stores. But those plans stalled with Tesco favouring the unit on the corner of St James’ Street instead.
Tesco Express Newport is the 6th Tesco store to open on the Island, joining other Express stores in Wootton, Lake and Ventnor and larger stores in Ryde and Freshwater. Jordan Guest, store manager, has said:
“We are really thrilled to be opening this new Tesco Express and begin serving local residents. This Express store will be offering a fantastic range of products, from fresh food to meal deals and our bakery. “I am delighted to be opening this store with a fantastic team of colleagues, 20 of which are newly recruited. “This store will be participating in the Tesco’s Stronger Starts grant scheme, which supports schools with some extra financial help to provide healthy food and activities that boost young people’s mental and physical wellbeing. We encourage all of our customers to nominate a school or group for this amazing grant programme.”
Local schools and community groups are invited to apply for community funding through Tesco’s Stronger Starts, Tesco’s blue token voting scheme, which sees 3 local projects voted on by customers in store every 3 months, with first place awarded £1,500, second place £1,000 and third place £500. The new Express store will also participate in the Community Food Connection scheme, which redistributes surplus food to charities and community groups from every Tesco store at the end of each day. Since its launch in 2016, the Tesco Community Food Connection Scheme has donated more than 145million meals to charities across the UK. The new store is located at 113 High Street, Newport and is open Monday-Sunday, from 07:00-23:00.

Just what we need in Newport????
Yes,the last thing Newport needs is JOB’S??
Yes it is. At least life been bought back into town.
Early morning booze supplies. Get in!
Yes, it is.
A previously empty shop being brought back into use again.
But, as usual, someone complains.
Yes.
Jobs and one fewer empty shop.
What’s your problem with that?
Every little extra helps.
Good luck
I think this is great, job opportunities for people. Good priced food and drink and a empty shop filled.
Tesco….they want to rule the whole world..
According to Tears for fears, everybody wants to do that.
How are the huge delivery lorries going to park?
In the nearby loading bay one would presume. Early morning deliveries at 06:00 to negate any traffic issues. It may even have a rear entrance but I don’t know.
Yes, there is a rear entrance.
Ooh matron!
But the front entrance is preferable because the rear entrance is unkempt and badly maintained.
Gosh you’re right Islandgirl, we forgot to think of that. We’re new to this whole shop malarky
Some of the guys and girls working in this store have been trained in the Wootton Express. From my experience of chatting with them, they all seem like really nice young people and willing to work. Well done Tesco’s for opening a store in Newport.
One empty shop bought back to life on Tues, one closes about 50 yards away on Thurs ( flower shop), so the same amount of empty shops again
Apparently “our bakery” in supermarket language means they get sent loaves that have already been cooked in vast quantities elsewhere, and just give it a quick shove in an oven at the branch. That’s the minimum legal requirement so they can give us a misleadingly cosy picture of having rheir own ‘bakery’.
