The New Year will bring about significant travel disruption for motorists travelling through Binstead, with the main road in and out of Ryde to be closed throughout January – and again in April – alongside the already-announced one-way closure at Quarr from February.
It has been confirmed that Binstead Road will be closed around the clock from 5th January, for a period of 20 working days, as part of improvement works being carried out by Island Roads.
The same stretch of road will be shut again in April for an additional 10 working days.
In between, Eleanors Grove at Quarr – at the opposite end of Binstead – will become one-way, for traffic leaving Ryde, between 2nd February and 10th April. This is to enable Southern Water to carry out a mains pipe replacement programme.
The result is near-continuous disruption for drivers using key routes between Binstead, Ryde and Wootton across the first 4 months of 2026.
The closures will impact thousands of drivers, but it is residents living on Jelicoe Road in Binstead who are up in arms the most. They’ve been informed that all on-street parking will be suspended during the Binstead Road works, on a residential street that is already known for its extremely limited parking.
It’s reported that residents have experienced issues when parking in other nearby roads in the past, including scratches to their vehicles and wing mirrors being knocked off.
The official diversion route for the January and April works will send drivers via Ashey, The Downs Road, Briddlesford Road and through Wootton. However, it is widely expected that many local drivers will instead cut through the Binstead estate and Havenstreet, potentially increasing congestion on minor residential roads.

Looking at the IR roadworks app. SGN will also start work on Binstead road from 16 march to 29 may 26.
So this major route, which has seen multiple delays over the last few years. Will be closed or impeded for 21 weeks, from January 26th until 29 may 26.
I have contacted the IOW Council, but they don’t seem to have an Highways officer to provide oversight of roadworks.
As your article suggests. Drivers will use Havenstreet, which has also seen multiple closures over the last few years.
Whilst carrying out the works perfect time to
install speed cameras and speed humps.
Agreed.Jellicoe road park down Brookfield Gardens anyway.
Road safety on the island is shit.
I don’t know why we pay Council tax.
The Council don’t have a fcuking clue
about road safety.
They need to visit Mr Khan who can teach them
a thing or two.
And 4 fucking months of hell for cowes to newport..Pallance road.
One of the major roads on the island. Total chaos, more pollution more wasted money and the council stay completely silent.
They really can’t get over themselves being so bloody helpful can they?
Not happy unless it’s ballsed up somewhere are they?
