UPDATED: Emergency services are attending a road traffic collision between a motorcyclist and a van on Parkhurst Road in Newport this lunchtime (Monday).
The incident has taken place just outside St Mary’s Hospital at the pedestrian crossing on the southbound carriageway.
A Ford Transit vehicle transporter and a motorcycle are said to be involved, with the motorcycle wedged into the front of the vehicle. It appears the rider has bullseyed the windscreen of the van.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area with traffic backing up to Northwood. All through traffic is being diverted via the hospital grounds, including Route 1 buses.
UPDATE @ 13:22 – All traffic is now being diverted via the Prison estate; Standen Avenue and Clissfold Road.
Delays in the area are reported to be up to 30 minutes. Motorists should continue to avoid the area.
UPDATE @ 14:05 – A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said that the motorcyclist’s injuries are thought to be ‘minor’ at this time, but that the incident is on-going.
UPDATE @ 14:45 – The vehicles have now been recovered from the scene and the road has re-opened.
Traffic is starting to clear, but remains heavy in the area.
