A driver has miraculously escaped serious injury after they left the road, rolled and then careered down a hill off The Downs earlier today (Wednesday).
999 calls reporting the collision were first made at around 11:45, leading to the deployment of crews from all 3 emergency services.
The hatchback had been travelling along The Downs Road towards Newport when the incident occurred. Island Echo understands that vehicle mounted the verge and smashed through a fence.
Tyre marks visible on the carriageway indicate the driver attempted to regain control before leaving the road.

Fire appliances from Ryde and Newport were mobilised alongside a specialist 4×4 unit from Shanklin. A significant number of resources from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, namely an Operational Commander and Critical Care Paramedic, also attended.
Emergency crews were split between The Downs Road and a rendezvous point at the foot of the downs off Shepherds Lane as they assessed the situation.
Thankfully, it was quickly discovered that the driver of the vehicle had escaped serious injury. They were promptly helped from the vehicle and passed into the care of the ambulance service.
Whilst the incident was dealt with, The Downs Road was closed between Downend and Rowlands Lane.
The incident has since concluded and all emergency service personnel have stood down.
The road has now reopened.

It’s ok knowitall Numptyman will be along soon
Until the useless authorities reduce speed limits on the
island such accidents will keep happened
ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY OTHER COUNCILS ARE REDUCING
SPEED LIMITS
Island made
Island numpties
Say no more
Not on open roads they’re not.
Wrong again, Numptyman.
20mph is coming, Labour Government is rolling it
out countrywide.
They know it makes sense
No, they are not!
I assume you know you are talking complete rubbish.
On open roads??
Where is your proof?
You obviously don’t read National news.
The island is a lawless backward place unlike
many places on the mainland that have rules and
regulations.
I would love to see a Mayor like Khan running
the island.
He would make the island a greener place and
safer roads.
20mph is plenty, what’s the rush.
You could always move back to the mainland,we wish you would, stop talking you’re usual bollox and wind your neck in!
It’s a tempting thought, the island is full of
speeding numpties
Hopefully you will be leaving the Island soon… one way we hope…
you are a complete TWAT… reduce speed limits, how stupid… drivers like yourself only do 36MPH all day, through national speed limit areas and through 30mph areas .. then you are first to moan about getting a speeding ticket. You should be banned from the Island, pure idiot.
I drive at the correct speed, it is numpties like yourself
who break the law.
Slow down F.F.S, don’t be a Numpty all your life
Bless
Driving at 30mph???
why ???
it’s a 60 limit along there,,.. in the dry, in good visibility… No reason to go that slow.
there are probably many reasons why it could have happened, but as a single factor, going more that 30 wouldn’t be one of them…
from the report is seems unlikely to have been a medical episode, so perhaps some other ‘distraction’….
I’m just glad no one was walking down there at the time… There’s a footpath along the downs there, which goes down almost exactly where the car ended up
I’m with ‘IsleoWill’….I’m sure EiE be along soon with a perfect solution of 20mph limit, with speed cameras & speed humps… or Parking Permits LOL
They haven’t the money..we got rid of speed cameras years ago ….stop trying to make the island like the shit mainland..
Speed cameras save lives.
Was sort of taking the piss he was obviously going fast not concentrating mobile or something..to do that.
The speed limit needs reducing along such a dangerous
road.
This road should be a toll road, that will stop numpties
using it if they have to pay to use it.
Toll road, you really are a twat.
It would stop numpties using it if they had to pay to
use it.
Toll roads are a great idea.
Don’t be a Numpty all your life
Roads are like guns – they are only made dangerous by the people who use them – I would add that those who drive slowly and below the appropriate speed limit are also a danger as they encourage some to pass them from frustration.
And the rest
Island numpties do 30mph + in reverse
Lol
He is normally the first to comment, perhaps he WAS the driver!
I was out dining, hence my delay.
Might aswell close that road permanently. Crash a day.
I agree. It should be used for Emergency services vehicles only.
Careless driving, defo on phone. Should pay the 999 services for putting them in danger. Utter scum bag
We need islandwide CCTV to catch what
motorists are up too when driving.
Driving whilst using phones on the island is rife.
Unless speeding, how does one leave the road.
define speeding….
the limit on that bit of road is 60,..
I’m sure a car would not need to be going at a speed in excess of that to leave the road… therefore not necessarily speeding.
‘without due care and attention’…. more probable.
It is not safe to do 60mph, if it was why are
there so many accidents on this UNSAFE road.
Have you not seen the way numpties drive along this
road.
I suggest going to Specsavers
More bad driving on the Iow
We need speed cameras FULL STOP!
We need a zip for your gob FULL STOP!
Calm down bungle.
