Mindless vandals have put the lives of others at risk after damaging an emergency telephone located outside Ryde Inshore Rescue at Appley in Ryde.
Volunteers arrived at the station yesterday (Monday) to find that the telephone had been smashed to pieces.
The yellow, free-to-use phone links directly to HM Coastguard who mobilise helicopters, lifeboats and Coastguard Rescue Teams to persons or vessels in danger. Although mobile phones are owned by almost everyone nowadays, the emergency line allows reliable, hard-wired and direct contact to the emergency services no matter what.
Sadly, it’s not the first time that this has happened. In 2017, the phone was similarly damaged, as reported by Island Echo.
It was in 2015 that the entire future of the emergency phone was in jeopardy as the Isle of Wight Council looked to cut costs. The decision was taken by Ryde Inshore Rescue to take over responsibility for the phone in the same year.
Ryde Rescue says that the phone is currently out of order but that the team endeavour to have it back in use as soon as possible.

This country needs to bring back National Service to instil some human values in this idiots.
How would that have prevented it from happening?
They would learn respect! However scum like these aren’t fit to wear a British uniform.
What uniform did you wear, and how has it helped you?
Bring back birching, they’d think twice before doing something like that again after a dose of that!
I just think that whoever did this must be a very sad person, do they have any idea what the consequences of their actions are ?
Probably not, If caught they should be made to pay for the repair in full and do some hard unpaid work.
MORONS
How will our heroes at the lifeboat get notified of a shout ?
Let’s hope they never need this Amazing service!
Oh dear I expect they were bored !!!!
Well sorry about that , someone may be in serious trouble or die because you were bored !
If found they should be dumped in the sea and wait for somebody to call the emergency service! Oh no they can’t cos some idiots were bored …..and smashed up the phone ….
Scumbags….
One day karma will knock on their door ….
Let’s face it karma stands a far better chance of knocking at these idjeets door than The Isle of Wight Police Farce!
Everyone has a phone in their pockets these days so????
I don’t have one, and there are others in the same situation believe it or not!
Maybe you shoul get a job then
Maybe, but also maybe no signal… or battery dead…
and????????????????
These vandals think it is funny…. hopefully one day they will need emergency help, but find out no phone… obviously bad parenting… right from wrong.. ??
For goodness sake put up CCTV in these high vandalist areas!
