The victim of a fatal road traffic collision on Military Road on Sunday has been named as 54-year-old Daniel McGrath from Tennyson Road, Freshwater.
Mr McGrath, known as Dan, is believed to have been travelling towards Freshwater Bay from Compton when his car rolled several times. No other vehicles were involved.
As reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to the scene at 19:40 and firefighters from Newport and Freshwater extricated Dan from his vehicle before he was rushed to hospital.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of medical staff, Mr McGrath died at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
The road was closed for over 6 hours whilst Police, including the Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland, carried out a investigation of the scene close to Southdown Road.
Friends and family have paid tribute to the father and husband with flowers laid at the scene. Tributes have also been expressed on Facebook with one friend saying:
“A great friend to many. Always helpful, always kind. Will be most dearly missed by all that knew his gentle heart”.
In a statement issued by Police, Dan McGrath’s family have said:
“Dan Mcgrath was a loving caring man married to Gemma.
“He worked as a carer in the community for many years helping less able people lead as normal life as possible showing a rare level of compassion for the people he looked after and cared so much about.
“It was whilst he was going about his job visiting people in need of care that he had his crash which resulted in his death.
“He will be sadly missed by his colleagues and the people he cared for but none more than his wife Gemma and other family members including his son Aaron.”
