The annual Battle of the Sexes at Westridge Golf Club was played on Saturday (28th September) – a fun day of golf which saw the men victorious.
This weekend also saw the conclusion of Westridge’s summer knock-out competitions.
The first 2 competitions were completed at the end of August. In the Ladies 9 Hole Knock-out, it was Yas Wright who came through, beating the past ladies captain Viv Tomlinson in the semi-final, clinching the title against the current ladies captain Louise Webb.
Yas would also be influential in the first running of the Mixed Pairs Knock-out, played as a Betterball. With her playing partner Shay Phillipson going on to take the title from Babara Sleap and Melvyn Probyn.
So to the final weekend. Playing in almost ideal conditions, the newly crowned BLF Trophy winner, Mark Royl, would find having to give 8 shots, a step to far. Gary Cass, finally finding some form, to win 7&5.
The Pairs Knock-out, ending up concluding matters on a blustery day. In a Greensomes format, father and son team, Chris and Lewis Chambers took the title. They were never behind in the tie but 5 up through 7 holes they were pegged back to 3 up at the turn by Sally Hardy and Phil Brennan.
A lip-out putt on the 10th for Sally and Phil halted the fightback, who quickly found themselves 5 down again. Wins on holes 13th and 14th kept Sally and Phil in the match. But a half on the 15th left Chris and Lewis only needing to half on of the last three holes. Which they duly did on the 16th to take the crown 3&2.
