The Yachtsmen are to face local rivals East Cowes Vics at Westwood Park on Saturday (24th July) in a fixture arranged at short notice after mainland opponents Pagham pulled out of Saturday’s match
This will be Cowes Sports’ final pre-season friendly before the start of their Wessex Premier League campaign at Amesbury on 31st July. Cowes have had mixed fortunes in their previous pre-season friendlies, having beaten Southern League Winchester City 1-0 on 11th July, but then losing 4-1 at Wessex League 1 Bemerton Heath Harlequins last Saturday.
Vics have failed to win either of their games against lower league opposition in their pre-season campaign so far, drawing 2-2 against Hampshire League Colden Common and also 2-2 against Island League Champions, Whitecroft & Barton Sports.
This Saturday, Vics will be without 2 of last season’s regular players Ji Nash and Aedan Coode who have both returned to Cowes Sports after spells with the East Cowes club. Vics start their Wessex League 1 campaign with a home tie against Infinity on 7th August.
Meanwhile, Newport have had a good pre-season campaign to date. The Port drew 1-1 in their first friendly against Wessex Premier Baffins Milton Rovers, then trounced West Wight 16-0. On Wednesday, Newport had a competent 2-0 victory against Island League runners-up Shanklin at the County Ground with goals from Connor Kelly and Jacob Reynolds. This Saturday, Newport face East Preston from the Southern Combination Premier Division at Smallbrook Stadium. Kick-off is at 14:00.
