The Isle of Wight is gearing up for its most vibrant and exhilarating event of the year, the Isle of Wight Mardi Gras 2024, which is set to take place on the streets of Ryde tomorrow (Saturday 6th July). This year’s theme, ‘The Story of Carnival’, promises a spectacular showcase of colour, culture and creativity, with exciting new additions and performances that will captivate audiences of all ages. The parade will kick off at 15:00, winding its way through the streets of Ryde, and concluding at the Esplanade. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to secure the best viewing spots. Highlights of this year’s parade include 3 magnificent burrokeets (Caribbean-inspired hobby horses), the mystical Green Man created in collaboration with Thingumajig Theatre, and 3 striking big head puppets that will bring the streets of Ryde to life. Ballan the fish will be back on his Keert bicycle and there will be lots more stunning costumes on display. Zodiac All Stars from Nottingham will also be joining the celebrations in Ryde with an electrifying performance that will add a new dimension to the festivities. 
Over 20 local schools and community groups will join the parade, enabling over 1,000 young islanders to showcase their unique interpretations of the carnival theme through vibrant costumes and lively performances. From 11:00 to 14:30, Simeon Recreation Ground will host a special Mini Mardi Gras – perfect for families with young children to enjoy a taste of the carnival spirit, and create simple costume pieces to join in with the parade. Hannah Ray, Director of New Carnival, says:
