A man who stole over £25o worth of Pokémon cards to pay his crisis loans has pleaded guilty to theft.
Alex Cooper of George Street in Ryde pleaded guilty to 2 counts of theft when he appeared in front of Magistrates at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.
The court heard that on the 25th February, Cooper had entered Oasis on Carpenters Road, St Helens and stole 21 packs of Pokémon cards amounting to the value of £237. He then came back the next day (26th February) to do the same – stealing just 1 pack worth £40.
In defence, Michael McGoldrick said his client was at the time of the offence on Universal Credit and had multiple crisis loans from the Job Centre to pay. He added that the 23-year-old was in a better financial position now and had recently completed an engineering apprenticeship.
The chair of the bench also added that despite his economic concerns, Cooper’s decision to steal the cards didn’t help resolve heating or gas issues.
Cooper was ordered to complete a 12-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work and was ordered to pay £270 of compensation to Oasis.
