46-year-old Richard Sullivan has been ordered to pay Asda £340 in compensation after stealing 10 bottles of Honey Jack Daniels from the Newport supermarket.
Sullivan, of Brickfield Close in Newport, appeared before Magistrates on Tuesday charged with theft from a shop – a charge he pleaded guilty to at the first opportunity.
The court heard that the previously unemployed 46-year-old, who is now self-employed working on guttering and fascias, had entered Asda on St George’s Way at around 15:10 on 17th October. CCTV recorded Sullivan walking around the store picking up fizzy drinks, crisps and 10 bottles of Jack Daniels alcohol.
The father-of-3, who has previous convictions for theft, was then seen to walk out of the store without paying. He was challenged by security but fled the scene, however, he was soon recognised from the CCTV footage as being banned from Asda and being an individual named on the Shopwatch scheme.
Amy Hosell, defending, said that her client was under significant pressure due to outstanding debts and had a sheer need to make quick money. She explained that Richard did not intend to steal from the shop but acted in the spur of the moment.
The court heard from probation that 99 unpaid hours from a previous community order were still outstanding as Sullivan was unable to leave his wife, Angela Sullivan, at home alone due to her mental health. Mrs Sullivan appeared in court only last week charged with possession of a Class A drug and a Class B drug.
Magistrates handed Richard Sullivan a 12-month community order with 20 rehabilitation days and ordered him to pay £340.54 compensation alongside a £95 surcharge.

Because they are scum they couldn’t care less about the law so they play the system and get away with very lenient penalty’s. Oh mental illness, rubbish. All you hear from these parasites is excuses.

She isn’t suffering from mental health issues- it is called a drug dependent come down and withdrawal, due to not having any class A substances to consume.
His solicitor said he did not intend to steal – really – so it was purely accidental that he grabbed ten bottles of whiskey and walked out without paying – I am surprised they didn’t blame his drugged up, alcoholic haze as the reason for not having the money or the presence of mind to visit the cashier before departing the store.
They are a pair of lying, thieving, junkie, alco deadbeats, whose kids must be utterly ashamed of them, or blissfully unware, that their parents are s cumbags.
