A drug driver from Ryde, who was stopped by Police after he cut across a roundabout in Newport, has been handed a 12-month driving ban.
Shane Burt, 36, of Alfred Street, admitted drug driving when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last week (15th April).
Prosecuting, Giles Fletcher, told the court that on the 16th November at around 10:30 in the morning, Burt was travelling along Newport’s St George’s Way in a green Ford Transit.
The court heard how Police witnessed the 36-year-old cut across the roundabout in a ‘dangerous manner’. When stopped officers noticed that Burt was shaking and seemed nervous.
When he was asked to complete a roadside drugs wipe, Burt’s demeanour changed and he said ‘you’re not doing that’ before swinging at a member of the local constabulary and running off.
After a short foot chase, Burt was apprehended and taken to Newport Police Station where a reading of 14ug/l for cannabis was recorded.
Burt was dealt with by way of conditional caution for the offence of assault by beating of an emergency worker after writing a letter of apology to the officer in question.
Defending Burt, Michael McGoldrick, told the court that the reaction to the stop was simply ‘knee-jerk’ and that at the time of the offence, Burt had several issues going on in his personal life. McGoldrick said that it was unfair to say that Burt was driving dangerously.
Magistrates banned Burt for 12 months and fined him £120. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 surcharge fee.
I have been saying for years Numpty’s don’t know
how to tackle roundabouts.
Give way to the right, DON’T GO OVER THEM
Maybe to prevent these types of things happening
again, the council should place concrete
blocks / boulders going round roundabouts.
FINALLY
We have all had issues over the years, some life changing
issues etc, we don’t all beat people, takes drugs or
drive across roundabouts.
I love reading the excuses, they get better each day.
Do we not have any vacancies at HMP’s anymore,
maybe we should invest in more prisons.
Will our roads ever be safe to drive on!!
Bloody hell, I have problems, but I man up and sort it. I don’t go out and break the law. People go on about putting them in the armed services. Christ, would you actually trust one of these sub humans to have an automatic rifle with live ammo. Gordon Bennet, do me a favour.
