An Island man who crashed his car into a hedge whilst 4x the drink-drive limit has been handed a suspended prison sentence and banned from driving for 36 months.
Trevor Pearce, 58, care of Bembridge Harbour, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court today for sentencing. The 58-year-old admitted drink driving and possession of cannabis last month.
Tom Corke, prosecuting, told the court that on the afternoon of 25th February, a member of staff at the Hare and Hounds Pub was alerted to someone doing what was described as ‘burnouts’ and ‘donuts’ in the car park.
The vehicle – a Toyota MR2 – then crashed into the hedge at the entrance to the popular pub and sustained front-end damage, as previously reported by Island Echo. The court also heard how Pearce had a passenger in the vehicle.
Police arrived at the scene at 16:20 and spoke to the driver, Pearce, noticing that he smelt strongly of intoxicating liquor. A Roads Policing Officer (RPU) also noticed a bottle of vodka in the front of the car.
A roadside breath test was conducted which returned a positive reading. At Newport Police Station 2 more evidential samples were taken, the lowest of which read a massive 142 – more than 4x the legal limit.
A small amount of cannabis was also found in Pearce’s possession.

Defending, Barry Arnett said that Pearce was a man of previous good character and that his car was written off as a result of his drunken actions – although it was seen being driven away from the crash the following day. He also added that things went downhill for Pearce after he lost his job as a result of an industrial accident that saw a nail go through his hand some 4 years ago and that ever since the 58-year-old had chosen to self-medicate with alcohol.
At a previous hearing on 14th March, Magistrates made it clear to Pearce that time in custody was a real option due to the level of the alcohol reading he gave.
After lengthy deliberations, Magistrates handed Pearce a 15-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months. A 12-month alcohol treatment requirement as well as a total 10 rehabilitation activity days were also attached to his suspended sentence order.
Pearce was also banned from driving for a total of 36-months, ordered to pay costs of £85 and a surcharge fee of £154.

Pathetic sentence handed out by the woke snowflake magistrates court.
Absolutely correct, we can only hope that the next time this drunken druggie crashes it will be into the magistrate’s car or property, rather than an innocent member of the public.
Why do right wing morons always misuse the word woke?
Hardly. He was drunk and acting the fool in a car park. Wrecked his car but harmed no one. Punishment seems appropriate.
I would have thought the Pub Car Park was private property, so what was he charged with .
Anywhere the public have legal access to is in law public.
So subject to road traffic laws.
Being in charge of a vehicle while unfit through drink or drugs… Hang him
Well you’re a peice of crap aren’t you, saying hang him. I hope you’ve never made mistakes or if you have children they never do, hang your child for being drunk and damaging his own car whilst hurting no one else. Clearly a bunch of pensioners who have never left this island in their lives that sit on here all day commenting. You’re all pathetic.
Dosent matter he had the intent to drive onto the public roads under the influence and if the pub owners called police that gives them authority on private property and they smelled alcohol on him so they had reasonable suspicion he was going to commit a crime in this case driving under the influence there’s also reckless endangerment disregard for safety of others or the property of others etc etc etc
He had the potential to harm others moron he had the intent to drive on public roads under the influence and potentially kill people he could have killed people in the car park so no punishment was pathetic as usual in this country
4x legal limit should deserve a £1000 fine and sentence suspended for life.
This sentence is not a deterrent as it stands
Some people don’t deserve to drive a classic I hope its fixed and given a more deserving home
A simple mistake, thank god we have a Tory government otherwise he could have been held accountable for a simple misunderstanding.
Shut up you moron a mistake is getting an answer wrong on an exam getting in a car 4x the legal drink limit and doing stupid shit that could have hurt or killed people is intensional not a mistake or a misunderstanding what did he misunderstand that fact he was pissed and incapable of operating a machine shut up idiot
Self medicate with alcohol? Ha ha ha . . . That’s a good one
One slip and it wouldn’t be his car damaged but innocent passerby… Minimum jail sentence required at least.
By that insane reasoning, every driver should be jailed to prevent possible accidents.
I’m not condoning his behaviour and for his actions the punishment is very Lenient. Maybe if he’d of been helped with his mental health and alcoholism before this incident then it probably wouldn’t of happened.
Aaaar didums a nail went through my little Pandy wandy a few years ago what a crock is this what passes for a man these days gets a nail in his hand and claims he’s so traumatized by it his life falls apart how pathetic does that mean I get let off if I murder someone because I cut my into my hand with an angle grinder once or dislocated my knee falling from a ladder the pussy willow should be banned from driving and holding a driver’s licence for life and sent to prison for 10 years with no remission and made to pay £100,000 fine and that’s just for being an idiot and a pussy and bringing shame and embarrassment to men and masculinity double it for the drink driving and doing moronic things in a car
Questions need to be asked about such a pathetic sentence, especially as there was a passenger involved – Hope he is being monitored closely.
