A Newport man who was seen running a red light in Newport was under the influence of drugs at the time, a court has heard.
Shaun Daly, 37, of Linden Road, pleaded guilty to driving whilst unfit through drugs when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (14th April).
Prosecuting, Liz Miller told the court that on the evening of 27th January, at around 19:30, Daly was seen driving a Vauxhall Zafira in a strange manner on Fairlee Road in Newport.
Officers noticed that he was swerving and that he had completed what was described in court as an ‘untidy’ U-turn at the junction with Seaclose. Daly travelled along Fairlee once again, this time towards Newport, where he was seen driving through a red light on Medina Way.
The 37-year-old was stopped nearby where a roadside drugs wipe was conducted, returning a positive result for cannabis.
Daly was taken to Newport Police Station where a blood test was carried out. However, this later showed that Daly was in fact not over the legal limit for driving under the influence of cannabis.
Defending, Barry Arnett said that his client had been smoking too much cannabis at the time of the incident and that he was no longer working as a result.
Magistrates banned Daly from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a fine of £120, costs of £85 and a victim surcharge fee of £48.

Legal limit for an illegal drug??
Who was the victim? Society by the looks of it supporting a drugged unemployed potential life wrecker. Here are my BACS details…
Why does the IE report say that the blood test taken at Newport police station prooved negative and yet he was still prosecuted and he pleaded guilty? That does not make sense to me.
Doesn’t seem right
There’s a contradiction of info here… It clearly says ‘further tests showed he was not driving under the influence of drugs’, yet he was still banned.for 12 months. So what are the correct facts in this case ? Was he banned for running a red light ?
Smoke weed and drive make sure u got vinegar to wash it out , I pass every time
So was he or was he not under the influence of drugs?
It clearly states that when tested at the Police Station he was under the limit for driving under the influence of drugs
Drug driving + licence suspended? Sigh. No doubt we’ll read about him getting arrested again soon for drug driving (again) but this time for driving without a licence….
Be sure to check next week’s paper!
