A man who died after a tree felling incident in Niton has been named as 42-year-old Paul Whitehouse of Queens Road, Freshwater.
As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to Castlehaven Lane in Niton Undercliff on the afternoon of 20th January. It is here that specialist trauma doctors battled to save Paul’s life after he was struck by a tree that fell on top of him.
Paul sustained severe injuries to his chest and died in St Mary’s Hospital shortly after arriving. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was unable to airlift the forester to Southampton’s major trauma centre because of a broken door hinge, as exclusively reported by Island Echo last month.
A 42-year-old man from Niton was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence but has since been released from custody pending further investigation.
An inquest into the death has been opened and adjourned until 20th May 2020.
