A man who was involved in a crash on the outskirts of Whitwell, that saw the other vehicle roll onto its roof, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
Marcus Waters, 51, formerly of The White Horse Inn in Whitwell, pleaded guilty to 1 count of drink driving when he appeared in front of Magistrates on Friday (12th August).
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that Waters was involved in a 2-car collision on the main road between Godshill and Whitwell on the afternoon of 13th July this year.
Waters, driving a white Citroen Berlingo, crashed into a white car on the narrow road forcing it to roll over onto its side, leaving the 2 elderly occupants trapped inside.
The court heard that he waited at the scene for around 30 minutes to see if the occupants were okay before leaving saying he needed to get home, driving with a flat tyre.
When he arrived home, he called the police at 16:15, notifying them of the crash saying he had consumed some alcohol before and also in the time between getting back and making the call.

Police attended his home address at the village pub in Whitwell and took a breath sample from him, with the 51-year-old doing so again at the Police station in Newport. The lowest reading that was recorded was 85.
In defence, Jim Osborne said that his client made sure that the other people involved were okay before he left the scene. He also said that Waters had been banned from living above the Whitwell pub as a result, and was now living with someone else.
Magistrates handed Marcus Waters a 36-month driving ban as he was previously convicted of drink driving in 2018.
He was fined £600 and ordered to pay £85 costs with a £240 surcharge.

Clearly a driving ban didn’t teach him last time. Should be a custodial sentence for second DD offense
If waited 30mins ?,but no police/emergency services arrived ,what took them so long, anyone can drive one side of Island in 30mins, it’s way call centre works by time they issue info to IOW police. Just as well no one trapped or worse car caught fire !.
this (at least) is the 2nd offence that this witless t*at carried out – and with a potentially fatal crash? Lifetime ban, lengthy custodial sentence, no tolerance for this.
Crash the van, with him in it.
