Emergency services are this evening attending an incident in Ventnor in which an unknown man has climbed onto the roof of a property.
Police were called to the scene at the junction of Ocean View Road and Steephill Down Road, Upper Ventnor shortly before 17:10 after receiving reports of a concern for welfare.
Island Echo understand that two appliance from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is also in attendance.
The main Wroxall to Ventnor road currently remains open to traffic in both directions.
UPDATE @ 18:40 – Newport Road has been closed in both directions, traffic from/to Wroxall is being diverted via Shanklin Old Village.
UPDATE @ 19:13 – Police have now reopened Newport Road. Southern Vectis’ Route 3 buses have resumed a normal service.
UPDATE @ 19:50 – A Police negotiator has successfully talked down a man from the roof of his property this evening, Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed.
Island Echo understand that the individual that was witnessed to be on the slanted roof suffers from mental illness and has this evening been taken into the care of the Island’s Mental Healthcare Team.
Two appliances from the IWFRS left the scene at 19:30, shortly after the road was reopened to traffic.
