UPDATED: A man has been arrested by Police this afternoon (Saturday) near to Norton Grange following an alleged attack on an 11-year-old girl.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police have been conducting a search of the West Wight area throughout the day both on land and from the air in the hunt for a male suspect wearing a blue polo shirt.
Multiple units were present at Fort Victoria near Yarmouth and the National Police Air Support helicopter was circling the area, according to witnesses.
It has been confirmed by Hampshire Constabulary via Twitter that one male has been successfully detained and will be interviewed later today. It is understood that he has been arrested in relation to a sexual assault, however further details are not yet available.
There is no suggestion of any further risk to the public.
UPDATE @ 22:45 – The detained male was arrested by the sea wall at Norton Grange after being spotted by the Police helicopter.
It has now been confirmed that he has since been released without charge.
