A fire that was maliciously started inside the ladies’ toilets on the Esplanade in Ryde last night (Wednesday) has forced the closure of the public convenience.
1 appliance from Ryde Fire Station was mobilised to Eastern Gardens at around 19:00 where firefighters discovered a fire had been set inside 1 of the cubicles.
Damage has been caused to the facilities and therefore Ryde Town Council has taken the decision to close the public toilets until further notice.
A spokesperson for Ryde Town Council has said:
“We are disappointed and saddened by having to close the ladies toilets at Eastern Gardens due to smoke damage.
“We look to get these back in working order as soon as possible.”
The nearest female convenience is located at the top of St John’s, at the traffic light junction with High Street.
That’s a long walk if your bursting! The co-op is usually open unless someone has been at them! Costa let’s you use theirs.

All public toilets should not be supplied with any paper so that IF you have to go, you take your own. Toliets should just be bare concrete block with no doors and a stainless steel pan no seat.
These places are used by queers, druggies, vandals as much as they are by those just wanting a poop.
Waste of council tax trying to make them ‘nice’
And the vandals who smash everything won’t be paying any council tax as they are almost all from benefit kept families who are forever being given more, which they now see as a right, and don’t see it as kindness, but weakness, so disrespect anything and everything.
Bring back the stocks. Instead of a slap on the wrist, put them outside the loo in the stocks for 24 hours. Let’s see how they are in need of a loo then
When are the Police going to catch these people that destroy…. the temporary ones were destroyed, now this one… why are there no police around ?? Why do we pay council tax ?
In answer to your council tax – to pay mainland police as hardly ever see any on the Island, when I first moved here over 30 years ago you used to see them walking up and down the high street in Newport, also the odd bobby walking round where I live. Dixon of Dock Green was the best copper around. I am getting more and more fed up with the continual rise in Council Tax for the Police when there is little evidence of their existence. They need to be seen more rather than driving round in marked and unmarked cars, that would be a deterrent if nothing else.
I thought the Toilets in Ryde near the traffic lights is shut. So that would mean no ladies public toilet in Ryde.

whilst i am not a fan of chinas social credit system – we are heading for a british style version
that being – if these miscreants were found that destroyed the toilets, they and their parents would find that the courts would have been empowered to deactivate any debit cards they have, deactivate any debit/credit cards their parents have and this will prevent them travelling around. They would be provided with a preloaded debit card that allowed them to buy food and toiletries only at a specified shop, with the money taken from their own accounts by the state. Household bills would pile up until their accounts had been released again by the state.
this would remain in force for the period of punishment.
