Mainland competitors took top honours as the 29th Annual Isle of Wight Hedgelaying Competition returned to West Wight on Saturday (28th February) following a 2-year hiatus.
More than 200 spectators gathered at Atherfield Farm under clear, sunny skies to watch 20 competitors showcase their craftsmanship in one of the rural calendar’s most anticipated events.
In the Open Class, Graham West of Sussex delivered a commanding performance, scoring 82 points to secure first place and the Denis Russell Cup. West narrowly edged out local favourite Tom Murphy, who finished on 79 points, while Kingsley Hollis claimed third with 72.
West’s technical precision also earned him the Peter Tunks £20 Note Award for best stakes and binding.
The Novice Class saw another strong showing from mainland visitors. Clive Bucknole, travelling from Eastleigh, topped the leaderboard with 72 points to take the Mary Sitch Challenge Cup. He finished ahead of Jon Jewitt on 69 and Gwyn Alford of Totton on 63, with Shaun Grant placing fourth on 58.
Bucknole also claimed the award for Best Hedge Laid with Hand Tools, recognised for maintaining traditional methods without the use of a chainsaw.
The Team Class produced the closest contest of the day. Bound and Laid, made up of Alison Wright and James Cook, secured the Landscape Therapy Challenge Cup with 71 points. Snip and Tuck finished second on 69, just 2 points ahead of Pleachy Binders, who scored 67. The Dog’s Billhooks followed closely with 66 points, while IW Coppice Group completed the standings with 62.
Despite mainland competitors dominating the primary trophies, Isle of Wight pride was upheld by Tom Murphy, who was once again awarded the Landscape Therapy Best Isle of Wight Competitor accolade for his consistent performance in the Open Class.
The Isle of Wight Hedgerow Group extended thanks to lead sponsors Landscape Therapy, Isle of Wight National Landscape, Pinkeye Graphics Ltd and Wightlink for supporting the event’s return.
Organisers have confirmed that the 30th Annual Isle of Wight Hedgelaying Competition will take place on Saturday (27th February) 2027 at the same location.
