A magical atmosphere filled the Newport Baby Café on Monday as Father Christmas and his elf paid a surprise festive visit to local families.
The Baby Café – run jointly by The Birth Hub and The Salvation Army – is a welcoming, inclusive group supporting parents from the third trimester through to the end of their baby’s first year.
Volunteers at the group include a breastfeeding expert, a retired midwife, a pre- and post-natal physiotherapist and a doula. Santa even learned that doulas provide practical, emotional and nurturing support to families during pregnancy, labour and the post-natal period – an impressive team of volunteers who freely give their time to help parents adjust to life with a new baby.
The visit provided a brand-new Christmas experience for many, including the youngest attendee at just 4 weeks old.
At first, babies and toddlers were unsure of the man in red, but curiosity quickly took over. The soft texture of Santa’s red suit and the swaying white bobble fascinated many, while the twinkling beard baubles – occasionally jingling like bells – proved mesmerising.
There were smiles, waves and tiny hands reaching out to grip Santa’s finger as little ones practised their social and motor skills. Every child had the chance to sit for a festive photo, creating keepsakes that families are sure to treasure for years to come.
Although the very young may not fully understand Christmas, the joyful encounter helped build early festive memories and traditions that will stay with families long after the day itself.
A heart-warming start to the season – and one the Baby Café hopes to repeat in years to come.
