Lawson spoke to radio show In:Demand at the Isle of Wight Festival yesterday ahead of their 30-minute set on the main stage.
The boy band entertained the crowds with their chart-topping hits when they opened the main stage for this year’s Festival yesterday afternoon.
Q: What is your worst portaloo experience at a festival?
ANDY BROWN: I’ve got a good one for this. I was at The Reading Festival; I didn’t actually see it, it was my friend. I was in the disco at the time, he went to the toilet and said that he saw a guy. It was one of those toilets where it is like a swimming pool of toilet; and then with kind of drop zones, if you will, above the swimming pool. And there was a man screwing around in the swimming pool and jumping up at people through the toilets.
Q: He is going to regret it. Best festival tip?
ADAM PITTS: Don’t wear suede boots. At Party in the Park two years ago I thought it was cool, I turned up in a pair of suede numbers. I’ve got Doc Martens on this year, something a little bit more suitable, bit more hard wearing. But I had to throw those suede boots straight away that day.
RYAN FLETCHER: Smelled like death.
Q: So, we do know quite a lot about you guys now but I would like you to try and come up with five things that we don’t know about you.
ADAM PITTS: Five?
RYAN FLETCHER: Five things you don’t know about Lawson? Okay.
ANDY BROWN: Well, we got the ferry from the Portsmouth this morning; and our first ever gig we ever did was in Portsmouth at a pub.
RYAN FLETCHER: Great fact.
ADAM PITTS: A cool fact, we were recording our second album in Nashville, at Blackbird Studios, which is very famous for bands such as King of Leon, people like Keith Urban, who have done their albums.
RYAN FLETCHER: Stevie Nicks.
ADAM PITTS: Stevie Nicks; so we’re very excited that. Another something people don’t know. Joel?
JOEL PLEAT: Open mouth kissed a horse once. That’s something you don’t know.
Q: So, do you guys ever camp? And what do like about camping?
ADAM PITTS: I think Camping’s a great way to go. I think if you can do it, that is the way you have to do it isn’t it?
RYAN FLETCHER: I think it’s a great thing to do, obviously, as a activity with your friends. A good way to go out drinking, probably [unclear 04:07] but it’s a great way to stay in shape.
JOEL PLEAT: It is, exactly. But one time I did a festival. It was intense.
Q: So what happens on your tour bus then?
JOEL PLEAT: Everything to be honest. I mean, I think on our last tour our tour bus experienced every sort of emotion, really.
ANDY BROWN: There was a near death experience, I want to bring that up. The guy who was doing our monitors at the time was leant against the door and was trying to right it.
RYAN FLETCHER: Oh my god!
ANDY BROWN: And he accidently, this must be a fault with the bus, as we were going sixty or seventy miles an hour down the motorway, he accidently hit the open door button and the door behind him started to open as he started to fall. I don’t know how he did it, he just corrected it and was like, ‘No!’
[Over speaking].
JOEL PLEAT: You know like that bit in Alien? When Sigourney Weaver smashed the window and the alien gets suck out? The Alien was me, it was trying to pull me out the door, I didn’t like it, I was afraid. It was a bad day.
Q: All of you are looking, especially Ryan, looking like you’ve caught the sun slightly. Do you want to show off your…
RYAN FLETCHER: Ah, I don’t know what you mean. I’ll show you. Someone take the mic. I had a day in Hyde Park yesterday and got a bit worse for wear.
RYAN FLETCHER: On the pedalos.
ADAM PITTS: On the pedalos, yeah.
Q: And Ryan, are you still dating Ashley Roberts?
[pause]
[laughter]
RYAN FLETCHER: No, we’re just friends and we hang out a lot.
JOEL PLEAT: He’s got a bit confused. He’s actually seeing a guy called Robert.
ADAM PITTS: His name is Robert Ashley.
JOEL PLEAT: His name is Robert Ashley Things are going well. Met him a while ago.
ANDY BROWN: He’s a personal trainer.
RYAN FLETCHER: A bit of confusion went down. No, we’re just friends.
Q: The Isle of Wight Festival; who are you looking forward to seeing the most? I’ve heard that you are massive Kings of Leon fans.
JOEL PLEAT: Biffy as well. Biffy Clyro we’re excited about that. Seen him all set up earlier. What a band!
ADAM PITTS: Fall Out Boy on Sunday, I can’t wait to see them. I’m a fan of theirs. [unclear 07:41]
JOEL PLEAT: Coming back on Sunday, are you?
ADAM PITTS: Yes.
JOEL PLEAT: I’m leaving in like two hours. [laughs]
[laughter]
ANDY BROWN: We’re all catching Tom Odell though, he is on one after us. So I’m excited to see that. I like him.
RYAN FLETCHER: We’re literally catching him, he is going to jump offstage and we are going to be like this.
ADAM PITTS: We are going to embrace him.
RYAN FLETCHER: And it is going to be a beautiful thing.
