UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at a block of flats on Cowes Esplanade tonight (Friday), where 1 person has been rescued by firefighters.
The first firefighters on scene at Briary Court have entered the flat using 2 Breathing Apparatus and have successfully rescued the elderly resident, who is said to be conscious and breathing.
Paramedics are now attending to the lady for the effects of smoke inhalation.
4 appliances from Newport, Ryde and East Cowes were mobilised to the seaside address at around 23:00, alongside the Incident Command Unit from Newport.
Fire crews have now extinguished the fire and are using a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear smoke from the corridors and the flat itself. The fire started in the kitchen.
Police are also on scene supporting their emergency service colleagues.
UPDATE @ 00:25 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service have now stood down from the incident.
The female has not needed to be conveyed to hospital.
