Isle of Wight community champion John Phillips MBE has been recognised nationally, winning The Lived Experience Champion Award at the first-ever Stars of LD and Autism Awards.
The debut ceremony – hosted by Mencap ambassador and Traitors star Alexander Dragonetti – was held at the Mercure Hotel in Manchester on Friday (5th December), celebrating those who go above and beyond to support people with learning disabilities and autism.
John Phillips, 71, is well-known on the Island as the founder of John’s Club, an organisation that provides inclusive social opportunities and reduces loneliness for people with a learning disability. Despite living with a learning disability and double dyslexia himself, John has dedicated years of his life to advocacy, hands-on support and empowering others to live independently and confidently.
As outgoing Chair of Mencap’s Voices Council, he has championed the voices of people with a learning disability at a national level, helping to influence decision-making and shape support services across the country. His award highlights his remarkable compassion, commitment and the lasting impact he has made to the lives of others.
Jackie O’Sullivan, Mencap’s Executive Director of Strategy and Influence, attended the ceremony. She said:

The awards evening follows the success of the Stars of Social Care Awards and the Stars of Children & Young People Awards, broadening recognition across the sector.
