Isle of Wight golfer Nick Matthews has qualified for the European Junior Golf final which is to be held in Spain later this year.

Nick headed to Lingfield Park in Surrey on Sunday to compete in the European qualifier – his first major competition following the coronavirus lockdown.

He started steady, reaching the turn 3 over par. On the short par 3 10th he almost holed out with his tee shot, shaving the cup and having a 2 inch tap in.

The back 9 proved challenging with some very tight hole. He held in there and had 3 birdies in the last 4 holes to finish 6 over and a share of 3rd place, qualifying for the finals.

Qualification means that Nick will now play in the finals – as he did lin 2019 – to be held at the Alcaldesa Resort in Cadiz, Spain in November.

Nick, who competes in the Hampshire U18 squad and is in the England South Regional squad, attends Ryde School on a sports scholarship.

The next big event for the rising star is the Hampshire U18 championships at Sherfield Oaks on 29th July.
